Kaiholoku’i (The everflowing water moving as one) To mark Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language Month), we introduce the canoes of our fleet. Our newest addition, Kaihioloku’i, is our first canoe in the unlimited class. Her name was bestowed by Kumu Vicky Holt Takamine, Kumu Jeffrey Takamine and Kahōkū Lindsey-Asing of the Pua Ali’i Ilima Foundation on Oahu. We came to this name after discussions in Honolulu and visits to Hoboken about Ke Aloha Outrigger’s focus on connection with each other, the community and the water. The name is derived from a mele (chant) referencing a fresh water spring in the Puna district on the big island of Hawai’i. The name Kaiholoku’i reminds us the six paddlers must work in unison as one body to propel the canoe forward and also references the estuary we paddle in where the water is constantly in motion but always moving as a single body. Ka’imiloa (One who seeks afar) To mark Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language Month), we introduce the canoes of our fleet. Our third canoe, Ka’imiloa, means to seek afar or to explore. The name is celebrated in Hawaiian history as the first and only ship of the Hawaiian Royal Navy was named HHMS Kaimiloa. The schooner was built in England as Explorer in 1871 and purchased by King Kalākaua in 1887. She was renamed Kaimiloa. Kaimiloa sailed to many Pacific islands on a mission to form a confederation of Polynesian states to counteract European imperialism. Our canoe, Ka’imiloa, had homes in California to Brooklyn and finally to us at Hoboken Cove. She is used regularly on our long distance expedition paddles with multiple 10-50+ mile voyages per season. This included our 50-mile 9/11 Honor Paddle with @beyondtheteams from Stamford, Connecticut to Hoboken, New Jersey via the Statue of Liberty , the first time we landed in three states in one weekend. Imua (to move forward) To mark Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language Month), we introduce the canoes of our fleet. Our second canoe, Imua, means to move forward or move ahead toward a goal. This canoe came to us on behalf of @kentislandoutrigger at a time when we desperately needed an additional canoe to accommodate our growing number of paddlers. They stepped in to help Ke Aloha Outrigger to expand. We are forever grateful for Kent Island’s early support and we continue to look forward in creating an outrigger program open to all in New Jersey and the Tri-state area. ‘Onipa’a (Steadfast, to stand solid) To mark Hawaiian Language Month or Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawai’i, we introduce the names of our OC6 fleet. Our first canoe, ‘Onipa’a, means steadfast and solid. It is a word often associated with Queen Lili’u’okalani, whose motto is “E’onipa’a i ka ‘imi na’auao” which can be interpreted as “Be steadfast in the seeking of knowledge.” Upon her overthrow and house arrest, the word ‘Onipa’a became even more poignant as she fought the United States’ annexation of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Introducing the newest member of the one million AND two million meter club, Jen! She reached one million meters last Friday, then we added the 982K meters she rowed in virtual classes with us during quarantine to help her reach two million in exactly one week 😆 Jen has been a dedicated member of our community since 2020 and we can’t thank her enough for all that she’s done- coordinating paddling events with Ke Aloha, showing up to all those virtual/6:30am classes and even providing the studio with the latest @highnoonsunsips are just some of the ways she’s helped make RHJC a better place 💛 Read on for Jen’s 1M and 2M meter milestone press release statements! “Today it’s 1MM meters with Row House! Seems like forever to get here, but given that I paddle most of the summer, it all makes sense. I love team sports. I always know that I will work just that much harder when I am with a group. Row House changed my love/hate relationship with an erg to all love! My morning workouts set the tone for the day and it’s my commitment to fitness off the water! Row House created a family with that act and I so appreciate Val (our primary virtual coach), Kelly, and Mel for leading us through it and am thankful for all of the friends that I met in addition (Michael, Paula, Julie, Lori...). Why yes, I totally meant to match the canoe… 😜 Participated in Leg 2 of #kealohaoutrigger bridge to bridge expedition yesterday. 21 miles after not having paddled for 6 weeks 😱 but happy to say I held my own (with proper nutrition and an emergency Gu pack of course.) Ke Aloha wins 1st place 🥇 in the Mixed Crew OC6 Spec Boat division in the 20-mile Blackburn Challenge around Cape Ann, MA! We’re proud to have one of our Ke Aloha coaches, Ken Dominguez, competing with Team USA at the 2022 International Va’a Federation World Sprint Championships in London next month. Ken spent many years paddling in Hawaii before returning to his native New Jersey to hone his skills on the Hudson River with Ke Aloha. We’re excited to have Ke Aloha Outrigger and East Coast Outrigger Racing Association represented on Team USA set to compete against 19 other countries. A great test of physical conditioning and mental resolve, Ke Aloha and visiting Bucks DB/Outrigger paddlers took to the waters surrounding Manhattan over the weekend for a 31 mile circumnavigation of the island.
