Day 19 - May 16, 2018 A beautiful wake up in quit campground. Warm sunrise breaking the coolness of night. Full bellies of pizza and treats to help with sleep last night. Our first day upon the Snake River. It’s narrower than the Columbia and so far today it appears more like we are entering in the countryside. A rolling lip to the small river valley flattens out and spans the horizon, reminds me more of growing up on the prairies than any other landscape so far and I take in the endless sky with its textured clouds. It’s not long till we feel the distinctive current of a coming dam, now all too familiar for us and we work our way as far as we can up the shoreline. Finally pulling along the rocks and where the brush eases. We find the gravel road easily atop that we could see on the map as our portage route. As we finish hauling gear up to it a pilot ship fights the current as well to push a barge up and over the locks. It’s not a long portage and fairly flat, however, this canoe cart broke on our first portage of the trip and on a bumpy gravel road like today’s, it’s only just, kinda helping. We have to do multiple trips with gear and the canoe with the cart unable to hold more than the canoe and even that is a stretch at this point. Along the route eagles watch us from a nest and a rattlesnake on the ground shacks, hisses and lunges protecting a mouse it’s killed. Scared the poop out of me as it coiled a mere foot from mine. Once we reach Ice Harbor dam there is a nice smooth curved road down to a boat launch to push off. We sit and eat some lunch here before setting back out. Not far to a park we had been told about to camp at tonight and it’s another quit spot with just us pitching our tent on a beautifully manicured hill, under some large maple trees. I wander the park till sunset where I’m sent off to bed by beautiful pinks and purples cascading through the clouds and glowing in the distant rain. I am beyond excited for tomorrow when we will be meeting up with friends from VSSL who plan to meet us along the river! Can’t wait! Goodnight Neverland!
