A conversation has been rolling around in my head from a couple of days ago. The Warner Robins Police called pops and said that they had property of his that was ready to be released. It was the sword, taken as evidence the night of his arrest. I asked him if he wanted it back as it was a family heirloom. He told me that he told the police to destroy it. He didn’t want it back as he loves mom too much to have the sword back in the house, and just wants to move on. This was the metaphorical burning of the Almanac from Back to the Future II. That dark future will never come to be and I’ll repeat I see a man who has fallen in love with his life again. Ex-bae/legal counsel came by the office a few days ago to talk to her best friend whom happens to be my office manager. I was on the phone about something, and saw her lingering around. After the call we spoke for a few minutes. She knew I was getting in the cage the next day, which was a huge point of contention during our time together. She said I looked good, I looked contempt and happy. I said, “Well pops is safe, Connor and Katie are moving on to a new gig, and I’m here doing the work I’m supposed to be doing.” Her reply was, “You finally found it, your purpose. You couldn’t have found it while we were together?” I’m sure in another universe I did and we lived happily ever after. I’m also sure there’s a universe where the same thing applied to me and Allie. I’ve been doing a lot of roadwork much to my surprise. I’ll say again I’m sure my new guardian angel is a huge reason why my hip and knee don’t hurt nearly as much as usual. I think about her a lot on those runs. The conversations we had both good and bad. I think about when I was telling her about what would become Lighthouse, she said it was a good idea. The philanthropic aspect along with meeting people in the chaos. She called it, “Being Bruce Wayne and Batman at the same time.” Pops said the same thing when he was with me all the time for 377 days. That’s symmetry. I’m going to go get in the cage Saturday and I really don’t care what happens. *Does math* Roughly ten pounds in ten days. I’ve had to do more in less time. So five in water weight, so another five in diet. I have hit 155 twice, with the last time going up from 145. I’ve typed it explicitly in the “Weekend at Bernie’s” protocol on my desktop, and I’ll say it again here. When I do go, whether it’s tomorrow or fifty years from now, I went happy and peaceful. I’ve won the two big battles of my life. The physical one in 2019, and the emotional/psychological ones of ‘23-‘24. Also know that I undoubtedly went out talking shit to the very last breath. I proved the people right whom had faith and trust that I would win those battles. I finally got the behind-the-scenes look at the work we do. A man and a family healing itself. Last week was weird. The first full week in over a year that I didn’t have to watch pops and run him all over the state of Georgia. Monday I headed to the Lone Star State to keep a promise I made. Two dear friends of mine are taking over The Children’s Shelter and will be far greater guardians, counselors, and mentors than I ever could be. Wednesday I was planning to have a dinner I was greatly looking forward to, only to be stuck at the Gwinnett Courthouse for four hours due to some nerf herder calling in a bomb threat. Thursday I went to New York for the CE required for my financial licenses. I gotta say I thought I was a black sheep the last time in the financial world, now I’m even blacker and sheepier. It showed me how much I’ve changed over seven years. Everything has changed. Saturday I got back and watched a great rock show where a man I truly respect and admire rode a de facto throne to the stage, then brought the house down. This was the week after all the celebrations and gratitudes over pops were over. It was the end of the long journey home. I thought about my late mentor a lot, and Allie. The work now is to honor them, to keep hurling myself into the dark twirling chaos and help who we can. A silver lining to the past year was all the time we got to catch up on to make up from the pandemic. Last February the terms of pop’s bond to get out of jail required that he be supervised 24 hours and couldn’t be alone with mom. So, most of the supervision was done by me. Friends and family helped out to give me some days off, but I was determined to be right there with him. He saw all the work and people i work with throughout the week. He said it was, “Good and necessary work. The last two weeks have been a rollercoaster. Last Monday we had the last session with Behavioral Health, and now we’re days away from pop’s case being dismissed. No doubt my greatest victory I’ve spent a year working on. Then Wednesday hit and I got the call I’ve been dreading, that Allie finally passed. Those two events reminded me why we do what we do. Why we fight, why we intervene and help. I’m okay launching myself into the dark twirling chaos to meet people where they are. To give them the two things they most desperately need, hope and a fighting chance. I always hoped, even until the end, that Allie would accept our help. I also knew that failing pops was not an option, had he gone to prison I would’ve never been able to live with it. Over the past year I’ve applied just about all I’ve learned over the past seven years since the passing of my beloved friend and mentor. I work relentlessly to prove to him right. I’ve gotten the last piece of my soul back that his death ripped out of me. Now I’ve sworn to work even harder, to reach more people and families in need. I do it with a grateful prayer and a thankful heart.
