Although I've been trying to bring the nylon string guitar back to the jazz sound for a few years now, there is no more iconic example of this style than an Archtop guitar. Especially the L-5 model. Designed by Lloyd Loar in 1923 it was the first guitar by any manufacturer to combine a carved top and back, f-holes, an adjustable truss rod and a neck that joined the body at the 14th fret. Later, given the need for musicians to be heard in the halls and slums where jazz took place, a pickup was incorporated that would later take the name of the great guitarist Charlie Christian. The L-5 can be considered the "Mother" of the modern guitar. The admiration I have for this model led me to pay a tribute to its 100th anniversary by commissioning its construction following the same artisan procedures from the excellent luthier @sedlacek.guitars. Last Thursday this beauty arrived from the Czech Republic. Possibly the most beautiful jazz guitar ever built. Congratulations Lukas. VIDEO in earlier post! On hold-ish at the moment… Here’s a Korean-made, 1990 Samick HJRG-302 hollowbody electric guitar — their clone of a Gibby L-5-style box. It’s got dual buckers, a soft cutaway, 25 1/2” scale, subtle bling, and a great sound. I just went through and replaced everything bad on the harness — new 500k pots with orange drop caps, Switchcraft jack, etc. — gave it a level/dress of the frets, adjusted the setup, and now it’s ready to go and playing like a boss and sounding better than I’ve heard it in the time I’ve known it (a few years). It comes with a good hard case and is currently setup with roundwound 11s or 12s with a wound G.
