Flying Home, Jordan’s fourth studio album, was his first on EMI Manhattan Records, which had been launched in 1985 by Bruce Lundvall as Manhattan Records and renamed after absorbing the EMI America Records imprint. Lundvall was responsible for Jordan’s second album, Magic Touch, on the Blue Note imprint, which sat at No.1 on Billboard’s jazz chart for 51 weeks, setting a record. The album has nine tracks, with three Jordan originals — the title track, “The Time is Now,” and “The Music’s Gonna Change” (swipe right for an excerpt) — five Jordan penned in collaboration with others and a fascinating cover of Robert Plant and Jimmy Page’s classic rock number, “Stairway to Heaven.” This album, while showcasing Jordan’s undoubtedly fine guitar picking, is freighted by a surfeit of electronic programming and heavy on the synthesizers, typical of a lot of music produced — whether jazz, pop or rock — of the era. It’s a huge disappointment in light of Jordan’s talent — a great example of an album attempting to be all things to everyone and ending up nothing to anyone. In a 2.5-star AllMusic review, Scott Yanow writes: “Stanley Jordan switches largely to funk and pop on this disappointing set. The title cut has nothing to do with Lionel Hampton’s trademark song, and Jordan, whose phenomenal tapping technique allows him to play his instrument like a piano, waters down the whole effect by using overdubbing, multiple keyboards and a drum machine. Lorne Lofsky: Steward Of The Canadian Guitar Tradition Guitarist Lorne Lofsky rocketed to fame when It Could Happen To You (Pablo Records, 1981), his debut release as a leader, was produced by fellow Canadian Oscar Peterson. Lofsky has since toured and recorded with a wide range of musicians from all around the world, including Peterson, but his hometown of Toronto has been his base for more than 40 years. In that time he has witnessed many changes in the scene of that dynamic, cosmopolitan city, and has contributed to many of them as a player and, beginning in 1978, as a teacher at York University. Now retired from teaching, he tours internationally with the Canadian Jazz Collective, an all-star group that he co-founded to spread the gospel of Canadian jazz. He took a moment at the beginning of a Collective tour of the U.S. to reflect on the state of jazz in Canada and on his long and storied career. The Green Country Jazz Festival began in 1967 and has since brought many world-renowned artists to the Tahlequah area. It is one of the country’s longest-running jazz festivals. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽: si svolgerà il 23 e il 24 maggio e si occuperà di esplorare i principali elementi della musica (ritmo, melodia, armonia, timbro) attraverso l’uso della voce e del corpo o di piccoli strumenti percussivi, oltre che degli strumenti dei singoli partecipanti. L’attenzione primaria sarà dedicata al rapporto fra improvvisazione e composizione attraverso l’approfondimento di tecniche di scrittura aperta. Il laboratorio è articolato in 12 ore (6 ore al giorno divise in 2 tranche da 3 ore ciascuna ogni giorno) più esibizione finale ed è aperto ad ogni musicista e ogni strumento. This past week had a lot happening for @hslu_jazz_volksmusik but it’s been so inspiring having these extra classes and guests visit& share. Monday night @gretchenparlato was with us - For a Q and A, and then band and vocal masterclasses. I’ve had small interactions with this super-human-human since 2004 on my first visit to NYC. She continues to grow& touch folks all across the globe with her music. It was so beautiful to connect with you again @gretchenparlato - your music has provided such inspiration to me personally over the years and it’s a blessing to get to know you more on this trip. Thanks for making time for us in Luzern in this Euro Tour🙏🏻 thanks for being open and sharing with us all.
