Too often are the “lower 12” and “middle 12” Laser Beasts overshadowed by their Japanese exclusive “upper 12” brethren. True, some of the weirdest and most creative sculpts exist within the Japanese exclusive roster (Skull Grotess, Grin Reefer, and Kickback to name a few) still, I feel that some of the best Beasts in the entire Beastformers series came out of the middle 12 lineup. #91 Fighthorn (ファイトホーン Faitohōn) is one of my very favorite Beasts from the middle 12 series. In addition to his elegant sculpt, I absolutely love the way his deep forest green armor pops against his brown base color! As a budding collector, I remember feeling genuinely discouraged when I learned of their existence. Adding them to my collection honestly felt like something I had to do, rather than something I wanted to do. To make matters worse, it seemed like whenever I was “able” to buy, they were never on the market. This was particularly the case for the Striped Carp, and I sort of just accepted the fact that my figure roster would always be 99% complete without him. Like in many of life’s endeavors, patience is a virtue, and toy collecting is no exception. Sometimes you just have to wait it out and be a bit faster than the rest of the mob of rabid Beastie Boys (people who I genuinely adore). Still, I feel like in the end, despite the curse of rarity, you’ll usually end up successful if you’re persistent. With all that said, I think these two figures possess a different, immeasurable type of value. Like an old clock, or a hand-painted ceramic teacup, they seem to resonate in the spaces in which they are displayed. Sure, I know the lore behind them, and I had to shell out an embarrassing amount of money (still way less than most I’ve seen) for them, so my opinion of them is undoubtedly biased. 🤔 Did something go wrong here? This is how Battle Fennec is shown in the Japanese レーザービースト (Laser Beasts) Book. But these aren't the colors Fennec is known for... Did you know/notice? Weird thing is that when you invert all colors apart from the Brown base color it appears to look a whole lot closer to the colors in which it was released (swipe for how it looks on its ID Card). Fire, Wood, Water and More?: I sometimes wonder what the gameplay of Fire, Wood and Water would be like if the property had expanded. What if new elements and rub signs were introduced to the line? The existing game play is basically rock, paper, scissors, which can be played with more weapons as long as it remains odd numbered. Of course, the line introduced the interesting element of Sun Burst as well. Humor me for a moment as I imagine this gameplay worked out. I did a conceptual mock-up of expanding the Battle Beasts rub signs gameplay. Introducing Stone 🪨, Air 💨 and Earth ⛰️ Elements into the mix. And of course, to balance out the power of Sun Burst, I've introduced Moon Shadow 🌙. Four new elements that, potentially could be very confusing, but kind of fun to design. I've also included a game play chart that probably has some errors in it. Tentacle Study: A work in progress look at the tentacle design of the Jolted Jellyfish figure. The design differs a bit from the tentacle designs of previous beasts, but i wanted it to reflect the difference that we see of the species in nature. It's an arm shape we don't see in the original line, but I think it aligns with the animal.
