Joshua has been skating for 25 years. “I love the feeling of the ice under my feet and the few hours away from the world that it gives me. Ice arenas are a portal into a different world where we can do things that are impossible in everyday life. Skating and coaching in balance both give me incredible satisfaction in my life because I can create and pass on knowledge to others. Unfortunately, in 2015 I was attacked at an ATM. I lost part of my right lung and had an artery tied off on my right side. As a result I have fibrosis on that side, and I have a lot of trouble balancing. Skating before vs. after are two completely different forms of art.” Joshua adds, “The 2022 article on FanZone about Wayne Freeman was a very big inspiration in my skating; getting to meet him at the 2024 Adult Championships was a dream come true.” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice

Krista has about 12 years on ice: 5 as a teenager, then a 25 year break, then started skating again in 2016 with about 1 year off due to illness. “I love the feeling of being on the ice. I may not be naturally gifted in the sport, but my enjoyment of being on the ice and hanging out with my adult skating community helps me be persistent, and I do eventually make progress. This year I hope be illness-free so that I can train consistently and pass the Ten Fox (my last bronze dance test), my intermediate solo free dance test, and (if things go really well) my adult gold free skate test. As a professor at Colorado College, I have had the opportunity to get to know members of our skating team. It has been fantastic to spend time with students outside of the classroom and get to know them as fellow athletes. Also, because Peggy Fleming Jenkins and her husband Dr. Greg Jenkins are both Colorado College alums, I have gotten to spend time getting to know both of them as we work together to support skating at CC. I have really enjoyed listening to Peggy give advice and ideas about choreography or a competitive mindset to our students. I am really grateful for getting to know the members of the CC skating team but also appreciate getting to connect with the adult skating community in Colorado Springs and the surrounding area.” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice

It was amazing to be back at nationals again! It’s always such an awesome fun event and i was so happy to see everyone and watch as much as i could. This time around did not go the way i had hoped. After getting all the crap out of my head in the open (which was a lot because i literally for a second forgot where i was going 🤦🏼‍♂️) i was in a good place for champ and was ready to have my best skate of the season. Unfortunately near the very beginning before my first element i found out i sprained my MCL on my bauer going into a loop. You can see when my body jerked and my right leg got caught on the ice. It bent to the inside and there was a painful pop (I actually said oww to myself) but then there was my first spin and I wasn’t sure how it would go but after i did it decently i knew that it couldn’t have been a serious injury but my body after that did not fully trust the jumps and i barely left the ice on my first double sal. I fought through it the best i could but ended up making really costly mistakes. I managed to finish the program really strong with a good double toe and combo spin so for that i can be happy and proud of myself that I didn’t give up and still actually enjoyed the performance. Yes it was very disappointing, but i knew i eventually would have a bad skate (just didn’t think it would involve an injury lol). I know that people still enjoyed watching me and all the support and love from the crowd was what I really needed to fight. Thank you so much for that. Good lessons to be learned from this experience and i know i will only get stronger and continue to grow and be vulnerable from here. The main takeaway is that shit happens and ya just gotta take the positives and move on which i did very well. Last year that would not have happened. I have more confidence and control of my emotions and i thank my coach @bergholtzclan for being my mentor and with me every step of the way and challenging me to get out of my comfort zone. I took a few days off to wait to be absolutely certain i was good and then i was back on the ice training so it’s all good for me. I look forward to preparing for the next season and seeing all you amazing people again!!

ANs post 1: it was an incredible week with @jamieelberson, Asher, and Tim, and my adult skating family. I got more hugs than I ever imagined, and every single one of them was appreciated. Asher made so many new friends—each time he saw someone he met, he would exclaim “there’s my friend!” So thanks to all of you who welcomed him into our family. I’ve had quite the journey in life this year, and I was thrilled to actually be able to compete, and then to place second in my event, doing two of my favorite dances ever, the Willow Waltz and 14 Step. Then, we had a hibachi dinner, picked up Tim, and indulged at Pav’s. I can’t say thank you enough to the @gcc_of_fsc for hosting us and helping us celebrate our #lifetimeonice. See y’all next year in Minnesota for our 30th! #adultchamps24 @usadultskating #asherspam #adultsskatetoo @gcc_of_fsc @usfigureskating @georgiafsc

Adult Champs, Day 5: I don’t usually stay long enough to participate in the post-competition Sunday activity. This year I had more flexibility and was excited to finally attend an @americanicetheatre seminar. We did their “6 ways of the spine” edge class, learned zombie-themed choreography, and did some improv. As someone who is always seeking nontraditional ways to enjoy skating, this was right within my wheelhouse. It was also great to see several friends leaving their comfort zones and trying out theatrical skating for the first time. And with that said, it’s time to peace out and head back to reality. See you in Minneapolis (or hopefully sooner). #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice

Adult Champs Day 2: What a day. I competed in my first-ever Gold Women II event and performed my Spice Girls free skate for the final time. The opening camel was mediocre. I know what I’m capable of, and that wasn’t it at all. I was mad and told myself to nail everything else, and I did! I scored 28.33: my second-highest total score ever. I also had a personal-best technical score and a personal-best performance score. It was my first time scoring over 11 points for tech. The points were tight and I ended up in 8th place, missing the podium by .27 points (a better camel would have had me in 4th at least). I was really bummed about this, but was cheered up when I received a highly coveted Terryl Tossie! Only 12 of these exist, and it’s given by an audience member who is moved by a performance. It’s now my job to cherish this swan and gift it to another skater next year. I even fed the swan some ice cream. I look forward to coming back next year and upping the ante a little bit more. Congrats to everyone in the group! #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice

Adult Champs Day 1, Part 2: In between my 2 events, I got a new passenger side window for my car. The car repair guy was happy to wait so that I could watch @platinumgoldmedalist perform. I had a great time doing my solar eclipse showcase program in the Gold Lyrical Pop/Character/Comedic II event, where I placed a solid 3rd out of 6 skaters and earned my 13th Adult Champs medal. I loved having the audience participate and was amused that the medical volunteers wanted to join in on the fun. 😎 I’d like to thank @marissa_ulchaker for coming to watch! We then proceeded to move out of our questionable Airbnb into a bougie hotel. Living the good life! #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice #prevagenadultchamps

4/4/2024, 9:05:39 PM

Adult Champs Day 1, Part 1: I had a rough start to the day because someone tried to steal my car. Part of the door handle was removed and the passenger window was smashed. I climbed across the broken glass and drove myself to the rink, leaving my focus on the only thing I could control: my performance in Gold Emotional II! I skated so well and felt great about the performance. The group was tough and I ended up in 5th place out of 7 skaters with a pretty good score! I really appreciate that my friend @nicolegramsherzog took the time out of her work day to come watch in person, and I’m also glad that my choreographer @diannalynnespin got to catch me on the livestream! I had a great time and plan to keep this program so that I can continue to improve it. Thanks @hoxxkx2 for the matching flower! #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice #prevagenadultchamps

Greetings from Cleveland! This is my 10th Adult Champs and it’s definitely the earliest I’ve ever arrived. I’ve set a new record and created 45 Wendy Bear sweaters in anticipation of the competition (last year I made 30). A 46th sweater is in progress. Michael has been skating for 25 years. “My success at the 2023 Championships was a result of the training I did leading up to that week and skating intelligently on competition day. It’s been many years since I had to compete or perform at altitude, and I knew that would be a factor in the competition. While I had a very ambitious program planned, I realized mid-program that my body was not going to cooperate with the lofty technical elements scheduled at the end of my program. I had to think on my feet a bit and skate smart to maximize my content—a skill one learns from years of professional skating. To be honest, I felt more nervous to compete in 2023 in Salt Lake City than I had in years. I had not performed my best at the 2022 championship in Delaware, and I truly wanted to redeem myself. When the time came to perform, I tried to stay focused and confident in my ability. I always try to remember that I am a performer first and foremost, and I love an audience! That self assurance comes from a very long career in showbiz (ice shows, singing, etc...). In each situation, ultimately the audience—including the judges—want you to do your best because they want to be entertained. My advice for anyone hoping to compete is to set a goal, set aside time for yourself to train and try to enjoy the whole process. Listen to your body and be kind to yourself.” “When I was younger, a phrase that I often identified with as a skater was, ‘It’s never too late to start something new.’ I started skating at the late age of 15, but I didn’t limit myself or my goals. In some ways I was incredibly naive to the normal skating progression and that was what helped me keep dreaming. My drive, my talent and the support of my family and coaches propelled me to a successful career, culminating at the senior level at US Nationals. Now that I’m an adult, I think the general philosophy that defines my skating today is ‘Just keep moving.’” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice 📸: KrPhotogs Photography

Sasha has only been on ice for 4 years, but he’s clearly found the secret to championship success. “I prepared continually, working with my coach Ashley Bergholtz, and remained flexible, both physically and mentally, as my routine developed. I am always stretching to conquer my next element. The best way I overcome my nerves is to lean on my preparation and work leading up to the event, regardless of the challenges. I also just have the most fun on the ice, so passion is huge, and I just love to perform.” He adds, “The camaraderie of the adult skating community is truly what drives us. We are all a great big family that supports everyone, no matter what. You will not regret participating.” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice 📸: KrPhotogs Photography

In 2023, Jill made history as the first Championship Adult Solo Dance National Champion. 🏆 Jill, who has been skating for almost 40 years, is in her words “a stubborn perfectionist who has learned that making mistakes (aka not being perfect) is the only way to improve.” She attributes her championship success to “learning from my many mistakes in the past, watching videos of my programs for what could be better (not just what’s wrong), and lots of falling asleep to skating my program in my head. We have 8 hours per week of ice time in my town, and I coach on some of them, so I had to be very efficient with whatever training time I could get. As for nerves, they’re always there and always will be. For me, it’s all about staying calm in the hours before I compete, listening to motivating music, and trusting myself.” She advises those considering participating in the 2024 Championships in Cleveland to “Go! Go with no expectations. Talk to people you don’t know. Tell them things you saw them do that impressed you. You will meet so many new skating friends, which I think is super important for adult skaters since we’re outnumbered by kids at most rinks.” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice 📸: KrPhotogs Photography

Today I had a great time performing my Spice Girls free skate program in the Champ Gold event, where I finished in 12th place with a score of 27.40, which is pretty high for me (PB is 28.78). I think this may have been the best loop+loop I’ve done in competition, and I’m also happy to have gotten three +1s on my step sequence! The spins weren’t quite what I was hoping for, but overall, it went pretty well and I have good momentum to build from. Shoutouts to Coach Gloria, Jodi, Jocelyn, Cara, Stephanie, Jenni, and everyone else who supported me today! Also: Congrats to the 4 qualifiers (Cassandra, Anya, Rose, and Kylie) on this huge achievement! See you in Cleveland ✌🏻🇬🇧 #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice

Today I debuted my new emotional performance showcase program: “She Keeps Me Warm” by Mary Lambert. 🏳️‍🌈 I skated well and finished in 5th place in a very talented group of 7, missing the podium by .61 points. Thanks to Coach Gloria, Cheryl, Aly, Alicia, and everyone else for the support today! I loved hearing the audience react to the tricks up my sleeves. 💁🏻‍♀️ Shoutouts to Nekoe for creating the perfect transforming costume and to Dianna-lynne for choreographing a program that feels so special, meaningful, personal, and vulnerable. I look forward to building on this experience and giving it another go in Cleveland! #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice

Kristina has been skating for 28 years, and she simply LOVES it! “I was not always able to skate a lot every day since most of my time on the ice is spent coaching, but I worked SO HARD every moment I could. I ran my program SO many times so I could feel prepared and confident leading into the 2023 Championships. I could definitely feel the excitement and anticipation leading into the competition from the adult skaters, my own students, other skaters, and from my family and friends who knew the competition was in our hometown. When preparing, I did my best to focus on what was in my own control (like working hard, keeping everything in perspective, and being grateful that I was healthy and able to skate). During the actual event, I overcame the adrenaline by simply listening to my music as I skated and enjoying my time on the ice and my performance. I’d advise others thinking of competing there to be ready to have a great time! The energy, the camaraderie, the people—there are so many fun moments that come from the Adult Championships, and I have no doubt that it will be the same in Cleveland! But also, just as I did, keep things in perspective...even if things are challenging in some way, there is probably someone out there wishing they could do what you are doing.” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice 📸: KrPhotogs Photography

Greetings from 2024 Eastern Adult Sectionals in Pittsburgh! Today I debuted my revamped solar eclipse showcase program in the Adult Gold Lyrical Pop/Character/Comedy I-II showcase event and received a bronze medal.🥉 It was quite the experience. During my program, the Chief Referee stood up (this is highly unusual). I knew this meant that something was wrong, but since he didn’t blow a whistle, I just kept performing because the show must go on. It turns out that the IJS mini system crashed during our event, causing scores to stop updating. We waited a LONG time to resolve the technical issue and finally got our scores. Thanks to the officials and the LOC who worked hard to resolve the issue and get us our results! And: Congrats to Rachel, Brian, Cara, Jocelyn, and Chen on a job well done! We put on a great show today. #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice

Megan, who has been on ice for 20 years, says: “I’m a little crazy about skating, and I can be a perfectionist, but I do my best to skate for fun.” Her success comes from “forcing myself to do full run-throughs, with all the elements, almost every practice. Nerves are part of the competition! For me it’s important to remember that and to practice skating with nerves, at other competitions, at critiques, or just by wearing the costume to practice. And then on the competition day they’re less surprising, and I try to remember I’m as prepared as I can be, and this is a time to show all the hard work.” For anyone considering participating in future championships, Megan advises, “It’s most fun to stay with some friends! And important for your skating to manage your energy levels through the week.” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice 📸: KrPhotogs Photography

Souvanthong has been skating for 14 years, and he attributes his gold medal to “training and lots of off-ice. Trusting my coaches to push me out of my comfort zone. To run my program from start to finish without stopping. It was messy at first, but eventually it gets easier to complete with minimal errors. To overcome nerves, my coaches would simulate a competition environment whenever I ran my program leading up to the competition. It included a 6 minute warmup. Scenarios such as if I was the first skater or the last skater, etc. Plus I always find it comforting that my competitors are my friends, and everyone in the stands wants you to do your best!” He’d advise skaters considering participating in future championships to “just do it! You will have an amazing time and be welcomed with open arms. The adult skating community is so warm, supportive and you’ll make friends for life. It’s never too late to pursue your dreams!” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice 📸: KrPhotogs Photography

Today I did something I hadn’t done in 20 years: I competed at a State Games! I enjoyed my very first Keystone State Games, where I wound up with an extremely loud cheering section from the Nittany Valley FSC (@nvfsc). This competition went pretty well considering the circumstances, as I couldn’t feel my fingers for the first 30 seconds or so, then I perked up as my body finally got warm. I’m happy to have completed every element even if a few jumps were shakier than usual (I’m NOT a morning person). Thanks to Coach Gloria (@glorialeous) for the pep talks, Ann for the surprise roses, Juliana (@juliana.drozd) for cheering on absolutely every club member, Marie for the good vibes, and Cara (@carascudner) for warning me about how cold this rink was going to be. 🥶 Congrats to all of the skaters (adults and non-adults) who competed today and good luck to those who have yet to compete! For your amusement, I’m sharing my medals from 2004 State Games of North Carolina, where I competed in Pre Juvenile Showcase and Pre Juvenile Compulsory as a 17-year-old. Peace out + see ya in Pittsburgh! ✌🏻❤️🇬🇧 #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice

Nicey has been skating for 5 years. She attributes her success at the Championships to: “My coach and I came up with a training plan and stuck to it! My previous Adult Championships I might have run my program all the way through 4 or 5 times before competing it. For 2023, I definitely did WAY more run throughs, which allowed me to turn my brain off during the competition and just enjoy the moment. I also took up weightlifting twice a week which improved my overall fitness and strength. Most of all, I approached every competition with a positive mindset, listening to my husband’s wise words ‘what if you just expect that everything is going to go well?’ I carried that mantra throughout my entire season! This past year I really trusted my training. I knew I was putting the work in at home, so when I showed up to the competition, there wasn’t much else to do besides have a good time and reap the benefits of training! My coach and I also have a pre-skate ritual of listening to 2000s hip hop/rap before my warm up, which definitely helps to shake out nerves. I’d advise others thinking to compete in Cleveland to prepare well and enjoy the experience! You can’t control circumstances, but you are in control of you. Keep a positive mindset, and block out any distractions that don’t serve you well! I tell myself, be a little reckless, and hope for the best — you just might surprise yourself.” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice 📸: KrPhotogs Photography

Tyler, who has been skating for 6 years, says he “tried to let go of any expectations of ‘having to win’ to skating as much as possible from the heart and be happy giving my all through all the ups and downs that life threw at me. I had some pretty amazing people in my corner that loved and supported me through the passing of two loved ones within two months of each other before the season kicked off. They really kept me as grounded as possible through all the grief, depression and anxiety. I would hope and encourage that anyone who considered competing this season to do it, skate from your heart as much as possible, don’t be afraid to show your heart; as scary as it may be, you’ll cherish those moments the most. I would love to be known as an artist on the ice and as a skater that put their soul and sparkle into their programs.” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice 📸: KrPhotogs Photography

Pamela has been skating for 40 years. “Skating is my lifelong passion and is keeping me young. I love the challenge and seeing what my body can still do at my age. Skating beats the gym any day!” Even though Alper has been on the ice for more than 30 years, he says “Adult skating is harder than training for the Olympics. I am a coach and choreographer, but competing with Pamela made me remember how much I enjoyed competing, the training process and getting in front of an audience. I switched from being a good singles skater to a very good ice dancer who competed twice at the Olympics and was even the flag bearer for Turkey. I traveled the world competing and now am on the ISU Ice Dance Technical Committee as an Appointed Coach.” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice 📸: KrPhotogs Photography

Grace has been on the ice for 21 years. “I was in the best physical condition and the most mentally trained I had ever been going into the 2023 Adult Championships. Doing two championship events meant I had to do run throughs of my free skate, free dance, and pattern dance every single day. The week before Nationals I did a little trip to Disney World just to get away, and it really let me decompress right before competition. I had no expectations going into the event, as it was my first year in Masters Intermediate-Novice, so I just wanted to do my planned program content, leave it all out on the ice, and be proud of my performance. In the past couple years I’ve found my love of performing, so my hope is that no matter the technical content, the audience feels connected to the performance with me. I would encourage others who are thinking of going to the Adult Championships to enjoy the week with the big family that is adult skating! Check out all the events that you can, but don’t forget to take care of yourself, too!” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice 📸: KrPhotogs Photography

My main competition goal is to believe in myself, be proud of myself and not to let the nerves take over. I have a new artistic routine, and only time will tell if my new ‘Y Frame’ makes its competition debut. Performing the Y Frame in a competition is one of my New Year goals.” . . 📖 Do you have new goals for the season? Or perhaps you’d like to share your long term skating goals. We’d LOVE to share your skating story - you never know, you may be the reason someone else decides to start skating and competing. Help us grow this wonderful sport and drop us about DM about your skating. #betheinspiration . . . #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice #britishiceskating #gbadultskaters #iceskaters #iceskating #mastersport #adultnationals2024 #learntoskate #skateuk #skaterlife

‘Tis the season! I’m so excited to be registered for: 🎉 My 10th Adult Championships ⭐️ My 5th Adult Sectionals 💙 My 1st age class II events I’m greatly looking forward to the annual family reunion and I’m thrilled to live within driving distance of both competitions this season. This video is one of my most cherished memories of last year with one of my favorite newcomers, @emelynskates. I said something along the lines of: “You only get one first Adult Champs and this is yours. Enjoy your moment.” For those who haven’t registered yet, you have until 11:59pm on February 1, so hop to it! #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice

Stephanie has been skating for 41 years. “I began at age 6 in Learn to Skate and competed through Senior Ladies qualifying track until age 24. Then, after having children, I competed in Masters Junior/Senior and Masters Pairs. Our success at the Championships is due to our commitment to long distance training with lots of travel. It took us training at 18 rinks across the country over the course of 10 months to prepare. I had not competed in over 15 years, so I stayed committed to training on my own 3-4 days a week to get back to the strength level to be competition ready. Nerves were a big factor, and doing a couple of practice events prior to the Championships helped; however, given it had been 15 years since my last big competition, nerves were very high at the event. My advice to someone considering competing is to challenge yourself to accomplish something new. Set an attainable personal goal with your skating over the next few months.” Mark has been skating for 39 years. “My first skating event was being a ghostbuster in the spring show as a learn to skater in Moorhead, MN. I feel our success as a team was due to consistent practice; it was a new partnership filled with new things, new entrances and new choreography to remember. The biggest challenge for me was balancing the timing of life, training, travel and getting into shape after some time off. We laid out the entire season; after discussing priorities, it gave us a birds-eye view of the things we needed to do and how we could achieve readiness. We had markers for laying out the program, deciding on elements. “test” competitions, adult sectionals, and of course the Championships so we could plan all the practice times we could manage while living in different states. On and off the ice I strive to be the same person, grateful of all opportunities, which I work at with persistence, patience and passion.” #adultsskatetoo #lifetimeonice 📸: KrPhotogs Photography
