Congratulations to Coletta Barrett, RN, FACHE for successfully completing her DNP defense in April! Her DNP project was "IMPACT OF SCREENING FOR SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH AND REFERRAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS ON 30-DAY READMISSION RATES IN PATIENTS DISCHARGED TO HOME WITH CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE." Coletta Barrett stated, "The significance of screening for social determinants of health (SDoH) in nursing is underscored by the critical role nurses play in reducing health disparities and achieving health equity, as highlighted in the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report. Nurses are pivotal in assessing not only the physiological needs of patients but also their social conditions, which can significantly impact their health outcomes. By implementing a systematic SDoH screening process, as a part of this DNP Project, nurses developed comprehensive care plans that addressed social needs. The project not only enhanced the holistic care provided to patients but also optimized health outcomes by facilitating referrals to community-based organizations (CBOs) and ensuring follow-up through a documented "closing the loop" process. The integration of SDoH screening into electronic health records (EHRs) was crucial, enabling seamless communication across the care continuum and reducing hospital readmission rates, as evidenced in congestive heart failure patients within the quality improvement DNP project aimed at decreasing 30-day readmissions through such targeted interventions." Coletta's DNP project successfully resulted in screening rates increasing from essentially less than 1% to over 70% of inpatients. Additionally, the number of registered Community Based Organizations embedded in the electronic health record increased from 0 to over 50. Congratulations Coletta Barrett, RN, FACHE! Eight Student Support Services (SSS) students at Southeastern Louisiana University received a SSS grant aid scholarship this Spring semester. Each student received $875.00 through the SSS Grant for their active participation in the academic support program. These students participated in academic/career/financial aid counseling, attended at least two workshops during the fall and spring semesters, have at least a 2.5 GPA, and completed all required evaluation forms for SSS over the course of two semesters. The SSS staff is proud to have awarded a total of $7,000.00 in grant aid this semester. Every year, I shoot freethrows for GiveNolaDay down here in New Orleans. For reference... I shoot 2500 freethrows in 3 hours (shot every 4 seconds) and take pledges for ever made shot. This year, I decided to do 2500 at 3 seconds per shot. I finished in 2.5 hours and made 1695 free throws. My goal was 1700 makes, but I'm happy with the results. The real celebration is that the freethrows raised $14,000+. Super excited...super super exhausted. Thanks to everyone involved that made today possible. Good morning, Lions! Believe it or not, it’s Finals Week, and this is the last Meet a Lion Monday for Spring 2024… It might seem overwhelming right now, but keep pushing through. You’re so close to finishing the race! In the meantime, we continue to spotlight outstanding students as the semester nears its end. It’s my honor to introduce you all to today’s #MeetALionMonday, Jean-Paul St. Pierre! Jean-Paul is a business administration major from Walker, Louisiana. He will graduate this Spring in just a couple of weeks—congratulations! He has held the position of Administrative Coordinator for the Office of Military and Veteran Success for several years and has provided invaluable administrative assistance to veterans and their dependents regarding their education benefits. If you think you may qualify for military-affiliated benefits or have questions, visit the OMVS in the Student Union Annex, Room 2304, upstairs in the Breezeway! He was also active in Campus Outreach, Southeastern Rugby, and Student Veterans of America. Jean-Paul served five years in the Marine Corps as an administrative specialist. During his time in the Marines, he provided administrative support to the “IronMen” of North Carolina and served the Diplomatic Mission of South Africa. He earned the rank of Sergeant in South Africa. Toward the end of his last assignment, he was awarded the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He shared, “Being a Southeastern Lion has given me the opportunity to connect with students from many different backgrounds and also helped me gain new experiences personally and academically.
