In the 18th century, England protected its export market of silverware in the colonies by not exporting raw silver. So Annapolis silversmiths were forced to reuse old silver for their creations, and they became experts at producing small pieces of flatware, especially spoons. Spoons bearing three different variations of William Faris' touchmark, W F: (a) tablespoons made about 1760-70; (b) bright-cut or ribbon-edge teaspoons; (c) pair of small teaspoons with bell-flower drop motif. The Hearst Castle project proved to be Julia Morgan's largest and most complex, as Hearst's vision for his estate grew ever grander over the decades of planning and construction. The project included The Hacienda, a residence–private guest house complex built in hybrid Mission Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival (working with Hispanic experts Mildred Stapley and Arthur Byne), and Moorish Revival styles. It was located a day's horseback ride inland from Hearst Castle, next to the Mission San Antonio de Padua near Jolon, California. Her work on 'the Castle' and San Simeon Ranch continued until 1947, ended only by Hearst's declining health. The Tiffany silver swan shown here was perhaps Doris Duke's favorite possession. It traveled with her on her extensive journeys during the last five years of her life, to Newport, Summerville, Los Angeles and Honolulu, but also to Asia and Europe. It didn’t get shipped to Shangri La, where she died in 1993, and perhaps she missed its silent silvery presence. It is now in Rough Point, her house in Newport, open to the public. We are opening our year with a fabulous lecture and luncheon at Riverside Yacht Club. Charles Burns, an Independent Curator and Newport Historian and a guest speaker at Sotheby’s Education in New York City, will speak to us on The Newport Life of Doris Duke. Two of Doris Duke's more unusual pets were her Bactrian camels named Princess and Baby. Both were born in 187 and came to Rough Point in 1988. They lived on the back lawn in the summer. We are opening our year with a fabulous lecture and luncheon at Riverside Yacht Club. Charles Burns, an Independent Curator and Newport Historian and a guest speaker at Sotheby’s Education in New York City, will speak to us on The Newport Life of Doris Duke. The focus of Mr. Burns’s presentation will be to outline the forces and influences that inspired Miss Duke, a now legendary icon of 20th century American Society, to so boldly and independently act, to the surprise of many, as a committed and focused preservationist. Retracing her life from a childhood as the “Richest Girl in the World” to two high profile marriages, we will discover the threads that led her to taking decisive action to save a significant part of the Newport community at a crossroads in the late 1960s and early 70s. This event is open to Members only. At Sotheby's, Lucian Simmons researches a painting's history of ownership, called the provenance. They can establish custody of the painting because the Nazis kept detailed records and the Monuments Men did a good job tracking them down. To determine custody, the team looks at the back of each painting to find the Nazi inventory code. Sotheby’s has been a leader in the field of restitution and provenance research since it launched the department in 1997. The sale of such works, gives us the opportunity to tell the stories of the people that owned these pictures,” says Lucian Simmons, Vice Chairman and Sotheby’s Worldwide Head of Restitution who has worked with many heirs and families, reuniting them with property stolen between 1933 and 1945.
