On May the 1st we, Living Theatre Europa, expected to stage Paradise Now in Marigliano, in an open air space, after being introduced and offered given a stage. Because of the unlucky weather conditions the festival which would have hosted us was canceled. So we went to Galleria Umberto I, in Naples, to perform publicly in one of the city’s great landmarks. The level of intensity that came with this performance was insane. We got severe interference from the audience, which harmonized into the performance, enhancing collective creation. In a second we were catapulted to what our predecessors used to do and felt overwhelmed with admiration and gratitude for the footsteps we get to walk into. Scenes from two performances yesterday of Paradise Now, a kind of guerilla street theatre in Galleria Umberto in Naples, and then in a bit more controlled environment at Casa Morra. Each setting was amazing, and both had interactive participation with the public. Gary Brackett directing me and my other amazing new friends in Naples. The Living Theatre was founded in New York City in 1947 by Julian Beck and Judith Malina. It is known for its innovative production of experimental drama, often on radical themes, and for its confrontations with tradition, authority, and sometimes audiences.
