The Department of Public Health and Safety has been quietly working with ALDI for nearly a year on the buildout logistics and project timeline as lease negotiations were conducted by ALDI corporate officials. The Desplaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District is sending out important information due to greatly elevated levels of West Nile Virus in the vector mosquito population and likely human cases that will result when precautions are not taken to avoid and repel mosquitoes and eliminate and report to us standing water that cannot be eliminated. Up to and over 5% of the mosquitoes we have tested have been positive for West Nile Virus. 20% of human infections result in symptoms and in under 1% of cases, more severe encephalitis (brain inflammation), which can result in permanent brain damage or death. Horses and birds are also susceptible to fatal infection. The Village of Forest Park is asking residents to help with rat control around their homes and businesses. Rats will eat nearly any type of food, but they prefer meat and grains. They will even eat pet waste! They require water when feeding on dry food. If you have a rat problem, your neighbor probably does too. Work together to share information and offer to lend a hand. Window screens should be inspected and repaired if damaged to prevent mosquitoes from entering the home. In addition, any openings around window air conditioners, clothes dryer vents, etc. should be eliminated for the same reason. If possible, avoid outdoor activities around dusk. If not possible, wear shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt. Loose-fitting, light-colored clothing is best. Appropriate use of insect repellents per the manufacturer’s instructions is recommended. Residents should look for potential mosquito breeding sources around the home and take the following simple steps: 1) Throw away all trash that can hold water as cans, jars, bottles, etc. 2) Clean rain gutters/downspouts to prevent water from standing in gutters or on flat roofs. 3) Change water in bird baths, wading pools, etc. at least once a week. 4) Maintain swimming pools properly. 5) Remove or turn over containers, buckets, wheelbarrows, etc. which may accumulate water. 6) Screen rain barrels to prevent adult mosquitoes from depositing eggs on the water’s surface. 7) Aerate ornamental ponds and stock with goldfish or other surface-feeding fish to control mosquito production. 8) Dispose of any used tires without rims to prevent water accumulation. You can support our team by standing on the sidelines cheering the runners on (see the route here), or hand out water at one of the water stations.
