ARTIST SHOUTOUT!! This Spilt Milk artist is the amazing @chantel_okwesa Chantel’s practice often concentrates around ideas of identity and a reckoning with her place in society as a queer black woman. She’s interested in the action of painting as well, revolving around abstract expressionism, creating these abstract realms accented with colour and brush strokes. Her work becomes around the idea of spiteful joy. Inspired by Toni Morrison’s idea that racism is a distraction: “I aim to create paintings that are joyous, light and peaceful, making spaces of refuge from societal and institutional pressures, letting them go...” On the 25th of May, we are exploring what letting go means to all our artists. May is here!!! And with that I do hope that all who celebrate are having a lovely beltane week (so while Beltane celbrations typically begin on mays eve /may 1st, the energy lingers for about a week and in some places celebrations are held throughout the first week of may) . So as the sap begins to rise in the trees ,as the earth begins to ripen in her fecundity moving from spring into the summer it is time for a little transformation and reinvigoration , time to let the inner rebel out to play ,indulge in our earthly, physical experience letting it lead, teach and nourish us . Time to play with the boundaries of what is possible, to examine conventially recieved wisdom and systems ,crafting new paths and forfing ahead with new adventures . Maybe you're re-examining some of your goals set earlier in the year and reorienting yourself back onto your pathway or maybe you're letting the inner rebel, the iconoclast out to play ,embracing with wild dyionisan powers so prevelant this time of year as you allow yourself to be taken to places you never imagined. The process of birthing a new reality can be slow, much slower than we expect and giving ourselves the grace to have that deeply human experience is essential. Sometimes, when birthing a new version of yourself aspects of the version of you you are letting go of come out to play and cause a little havoc. When this happens try to forgive yourself and keep moving forward. This is a lesson that it is deeply humbling to be learning for myself right now as I straddle that liminal in between who I have been and who Iam becoming, everytime this happens and to be fair its becoming less frequent , Iam in awe of the depth of the compassion Iam able to have for myself the capacity to crack open that egg and scoop out the formless potentia nova and add it to the self and life iam sculpting is honestly to awe inspiring for words and it all stems from showing myself the love and compassion I denied myself for so long.
