Bolo do caco is a delicious, round flatbread from Porto Santo Island. It was made using leftover ingredients from other bread-making processes and is now made with flour, yeast, sweet, salt, potato, and sugar. The bread gets its name from its cake-like appearance, which is due to its soft and fluffy texture. Traditionally, it's cooked on a flat basalt stone slab known as "caco," which gives it its unique name. Bolo do Caco is a type of bread that is very popular in Madeira. It has a soft, pillowy texture and is usually served with butter, which complements its taste perfectly. This versatile bread can be enjoyed at any time of the day - be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. It can be eaten on its own as a snack or shared dish, and can also be used to make sandwiches. If you ever visit any of the Madeira Islands you'll find Bolo do caco everywhere, from local bars, bakeries, and supermarkets to street parties and restaurants. However, the best way to enjoy this delicious bread is while it's still warm and smothered in freshly made garlic butter. Easter (Páscoa) is just around the corner and Madeira has a fun tradition that will keep you on the edge of your seat! It’s called Balamento and it involves making a pact with a friend or more a week or two before Easter. 🐣🐰🥚💐 The goal is to catch your friend off guard and scream “Balamento!” to earn a point for each day you manage to surprise them. But beware, your friend will be trying to do the same to you! It’s a thrilling game of cat and mouse that will keep you both on your toes until Good Friday. And the best part? The winner gets a delicious reward from the loser, either a bag of Easter almonds or an Easter egg. I used to love this adrenaline-pumping fun and always made sure I played with as many friends as possible. With regular practice, I always end up with a huge stash of Easter treats. Here's just a taste: 1) Our IEA riding team took their snacking seriously during the Regional competition in early February. #MadeiraEquestrian 2) Performing arts students got a peek behind the curtain of a working actor’s life when they spoke with Broadway veteran and "Rock of Ages" alumna Kirsten Scott. #MadeiraTheatre 3) We welcomed our loved ones back to campus for Family Friday and enjoyed some lovely snacks while we were at it. #MadeiraTraditions 4) During Dr. Boyette's Chem lab, students measured the changes in pH when a strong acid or base is incrementally added to a weak base or acid. #MadeiraSTEAM #MadeiraScience 5) We celebrated Kindness Week by sending sweet notes to friends, faculty, and staff around campus. #MadeiraCommunity 6) 11th grade U.S. History students heard from Dr. Nguyet Nguyen, a history professor at the University of Alaska Southeast and a scholar of US foreign relations, the Vietnam War, transnationalism, global activism, gender, and more. After considering their collegiate "must haves" and creating personal mantras, students brought their loved ones along to class, inviting them to join in on monologues, blood spatter labs, and more!
