To round out the week, let's celebrate the future of the industry, and those helping them along. Thank you Robert Russo and Florida Youth Maritime Training! Florida Youth Maritime Training is an IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide vocational training to disadvantaged youth at risk and other underserved youth such as those aging out of the foster care system. Students take an Introduction to Marine Service Technology among other training to become a “Deckineer,” or a deck hand who knows their way around the engine room on a commercial vessel. They encourage students to continue onwards to become Qualified Members of the Engineering Department and finally Designated Duty Engineers. FYMT also uses the Introduction to Marine Service Technology program to train re-entering formerly incarcerated individuals to become Commercial Fishermen. “Our goal is to change the socio-economic status of the population we serve.” ... #MarineServiceTechWeek #ThankYouMarineTechs

Some more love for our Female Technicians - ABYC is proud to recognize Lisa Esposito as the 2024 recipient of the Bolling Douglas Memorial Award! The Bolling Douglas Award recognizes a female ABYC Member who best exemplifies dedication to the marine industry with the advancement of safety, education and standards in recreational boating. Lisa grew up sailing the Long Island Sound with her family, leading her to enroll in a semester aboard a tall ship through the Sea Education Association program while pursuing an undergraduate degree from Trinity College. After graduating from the Marine Systems Program at IYRS School of Technology & Trades, she spent a little under the year working as a marine-electronics technician. Lisa returned to IYRS as an instructor with ABYC Master Technician credentials as well as several other certifications through NMEA. Let's hear it for our Female Technicians in the industry! Today, we're celebrating Cynthia Benitz. Cynthia Benitz grew up on a small island in Southeast Alaska where she found the love of the outdoors at a young age. Every summer of her childhood/young adult life, she spent on her father’s boat commercial crab fishing for Dungeness crab. All that time on the water perked her interest in how to maintain vessels in good working condition, along with learning about electronics to improve fishing strategy Cynthia attended the Marine Maintenance Technology program in Anacortes, WA, which is where she was introduced to NMEA & ABYC. After moving back to her hometown Petersburg, Cynthia purchased her own crab skiff operation & has been running that for the last several years. In the off season, she works as a Marine Technician for Alaska Commercial Electronics providing electronics installation & service work to the local fishing fleet.
