I cannot stop reliving these moments we had in Costa Rica. Even though the trip was a gift for Travis's birthday, I made one of my childhood dreams come true. I LEARNED HOW TO SURF!!! 🏄♀️ I couldn't have done it without the amazing program coordinators at @maximoabroad or our incredible instructors from @mass_surf_and_tours__ . ¡MUCHAS GRACIAS! Not to mention the absolute joy and privilege it was to share the experience with the love of my life. I sincerely enjoyed watching the joy learning to surf brought him. He is a natural! 🥰 I am thankful for the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful piece of the world again. We saved for over a year and waited for the right time to take this vacation. We met some pretty great people along our journey, too! Shout out to our surf classmates, the ice cold coconut vendors and our gracious host families!! A smile transcends any language barrier ✨ It’s been a month since my volunteer trip to Costa Rica and I just wanted to highlight some of the amazing people I met during my stay 🌞 From field managers from the volunteer organization @maximoabroad, to doctors and staff at the church clinic we were stationed at, to our host mother who only spoke Spanish—I’m grateful to have crossed paths with these people who share the goal of helping others. While my trip to Costa Rica was short, I continue to admire these people who choose to do this as part of their every day lives. Most communication was made with the help of Google Translate, but the like mindedness and shared intent to give back when you can never needed a translation. Thought it was so fitting when I came back and my Yogi Tea bag said “laughter is the same in all languages.” 🫶🏼

"My experience at #MaximoCostaRica was just what I needed to spark my enthusiasm for adventure and help me explore my passions! The staff was amazing, the facility itself is such a safe and welcoming environment, and Costa Rica as a whole now has a special place in my heart. My first month here I took intensive 4 hour Spanish lessons. I had an amazing teacher who made learning fun and not only worked to understand my learning style but also my interests and personality. Being that I’m an artist she let me incorporate art into my projects and took me on field trips to different museums to help me learn about Costa Rica through a creative lens. This made the classes interactive and there was always something to look forward to! In my second and third months I had the opportunity of interning at 2 places. The first was a travel agency where I put together personalized programs in Spanish for local people wanting to travel to other countries. This was extremely exciting because it was my first office job where I had my own desk and work space! I studied journalism in college so I it was also exciting to get some Spanish writing practice in as well. At my second internship I worked at a community center in a local park to put on an art festival for the community. Specifically, I got to interview and talk with artists and help them display their work at the festival! Because my specialization is in Public Relations, this was a great way to test my skills and be the middleman between staff and artists making everyone feel heard and included! These internships were a little nerve racking because they were both in Spanish and I am only at the intermediate level, but with the help of my teachers and kind co workers we figured it out and created some wonderful projects! I’m really thankful to Maximo for their resources, support, and fun events they always put on! I loved learning new things at the salsa and cooking classes, and singing my heart out with friends at each Karoke! Being that this was my first time traveling alone I am also so thankful that Maximo helped everything go smoothly and made sure to check in with me at every step." - @justjanaej

The last 4 weeks in Costa Rica have been rewarding, testing and unique for numerous reasons. As I pack my bags to leave this beautiful country, I have put together a photo anthology of 10 things that were the highlights for me. 1. Watching a sloth & a trogon in the Manuela Antonio national park 2. Having stunning toucans, humming birds and scarlet macaws fly past our open classroom each day 3. Kayaking through some really thick labyrinth of mangrove forests. 4. Sighting the ‘Silky anteater’ in the mangroves, which is touted to be the world’s smallest ant eater 5. Attending a workshop on Cacao- from ‘bean to bar’. Learning the religious & historical significance of this super food for the native communities of this land. Tasting a cacao fruit for first time & making my own traditional chocolate bars with the original 100% dark chocolate. 6. Watching the stunning sunrise and sunsets as the clouds, sun and moon took turns to paint the canvas of the sky differently each day! 7. Experiencing stars overhead and below your feet. The beach where were stayed had some incredible bioluminescent fungus light up the sand on a no-moon day. On such days we would have the milky way overhead and a sparkling glow below our feet. 8. Walking the beach during our night patrols on full moon days was a treat. We would be flooded in the moonlight and that would make the night patrols so much fun. Our patrol duties were anywhere between 2-4 hours and would be scheduled anytime between 7:30pm-3am. It entailed scanning the beaches for turtle activity, retrieving eggs if we found any nests and bringing them back into the hatchery for safe incubation. 9. The absolute privilege of watching a turtle make a nest, lay eggs and then to witness the hatchlings emerge from the nests at the hatchery & make their way into the ocean. 10.Last but not the least the amazing people that I crossed paths with. Travel & trying situations brings to the fore so many shades of human behaviour. . . . #costarica #maximonivelcostarica #solotravel #earthwisepune
