When I first started in photography I always felt like every picture had to be of smiling, happy people looking perfectly at the camera - but the more I photographed families, the more I realized that the photos that made parents (and me) feel the biggest feelings were the ones that weren’t perfectly posed. Instead, it was the photos of laughter, serious faces, pouty lips, chubby rolls or wisps of hair that brought the feelings to life. So now, that’s what I search & strive for - the perfectly imperfect in-between moments.
Artists & Creatives are constantly trying to fine tune their creativity - which means we’re never truly satisfied. And we are our biggest critics - just when we think we’ve leveled up and are happy about our work, we’ll wake up the next day and want to scrap everything 😂 It’s a never ending journey. I read something this weekend that said your little love will only be as little as they are today. And that hit me - as a mom of teens I can truly attest to how quickly time goes. When I was in the thick of raising little kids, I wasn’t always aware of how quickly time was passing & how much they were changing, but then all of a sudden, they’re older and you come up for air and realize just how different they are. My boys are still off from school and start back Wednesday - I’ve used this break to refresh the studio - and it is looking so so good! I have my first Newborn of 2024 tomorrow and I’m so excited to be back in the studio with babies.

What’s something that you’ve always loved about your kid(s)? You know, the thing you hope to always remember & that makes your heart swell? It can be a feature of theirs, or something they do or say. . For me, it was the way my kids head/hair smells. Since they were babies I’d take note of their scent. I vividly remember feeling the sorrow of knowing that their newborn scent would fade to a toddler scent - to a kid scent to now a teen scent. I wished I could bottle their unique little scents. Even know as teens, I’ll ask to kiss their heads just so I can smell them (when they’re clean of course 😂). The beauty of art & creative spaces is that there are unlimited ways to authentically express yourself. . Over the years, I’ve always known what creative direction felt most authentic to me, but regularly found myself trying to keep up with the Jones’s and would create photographs that weren’t really in line with the style that made my heart & soul sing. . Being a creative is a giant invitation for that pesky thing called Imposter Syndrome to live on your shoulder. And with so many incredibly diverse & talented artists out there, it can be so easy to just copy what someone else is doing, rather than creating art from a place of soulful inspiration. . This year, I want to lean in to the style of art that calls to me and easily flows from within me. Older Newborns (3-6 weeks old) are often an age range that some photographers feel nervous about photographing - and with good reason lol. Older newborns are often more alert, have longer wake periods and prefer to be loose rather than swaddled. So their session can definitely go slightly different from a 1-2 week old. Some photographers won’t even work with newborns over 3 weeks old - but not me. Though I try to see newborns in their first 1-2 weeks after birth, I successfully work with newborns up to 6 weeks. I just tweak their session slightly to accommodate their development. So if baby had to be in the NICU, you had a challenging birth or just didn’t think to get photos until they were 3 weeks old - no need to feel like you’re out of time - I love working with older newborns. . . . . . . . . #mcallen #mcallentexas #mcallenphotographer #mcallennewbornphotographer #mcallenfamilyphotographer #mcallenbabyphotographer
A lot of parents come to their session worried about being in the picture. They’re nervous about looking at the camera & having to smile the whole time, worried about feeling & looking awkward - these are such valid feelings - but fortunately when you work with me, I don’t expect you to “perform” for the camera. You won’t have to smile the whole time & feel unlike yourself. Instead, I’ll give you gentle directions to connect with your family and then capture what happens next. . I want you to feel comfortable. I want you to feel like yourself.
