BIG NEWS! 🥳 The City of San Diego and the nonprofit Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) Foundation are actively working to acquire land to add to the park. Land acquisition is one of Mission Trails’ 12 priority projects derived from the park’s 2019 Master Plan Update. In fall 2022, the MTRP Foundation received a $2 million grant from the San Diego River Conservancy (SDRC) -- an independent and non-regulatory state agency -- to purchase land and expand the park in the East Elliott Community Planning Area north of State Route 52 and west of Mast Boulevard. Parcels in East Elliott are in private ownership and fall within Mission Trails’ boundaries. We’re proud to share that last week the MTRP Foundation closed escrow on 55 acres that will be donated to the City and become part of Mission Trails. This acquisition is the first of several thanks to funding from SDRC. It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s... a moth?! 😮 The white-lined sphynx moth (Hyles lineata) is sometimes mistaken as a hummingbird due to its flight pattern and size. Notice that long tongue-like thing protruding from the moth into the flower? That’s called a proboscises. A proboscises is an elongated appendage from the head of an animal – like elephant and it’s trunk. In this case, the sphinx moths have unusually long proboscises to access nectar in flowers. It's California Native Plant Week! 🌻Today we are highlighting two plants: coast live oak and California centaury. 🌳🌸 🌳Coast live oak are gentle giants, with some towering at over 80 feet tall. 🌳Oaks are host plants to several butterflies, including California Sister, Propertius Duskywing, and Mournful Duskywing. 🌳They are also resilient and can often live for over 250 years! 🌸California centaury is an endemic species, meaning its region doesn’t extend outside of California. 🌸This plant is tiny, rarely reaching over a foot tall. 🌸These pink flowers are in bloom, and make sure you look at their unique anthers, the part of the flower that holds pollen, that is shaped like a spiral! 💚 "This isn't an event; this is a movement." During our group gratitude circle yesterday, one of the attendees made this comment, and it resonated deeply with me. As I read from 'Hiking Your Feelings,' with the majestic mountains as our backdrop, I shared how the @missiontrails_regionalpark #5PeakChallenge helped me reconnect with my inner self and remember my humanity. I paused to mention how we all underestimated Kwaay Paay's difficulty and laughed about mispronouncing Cowles Mountain. Despite our differences, we found unity in our shared love for this place. What struck me most was the turnout. Normally, events like this in San Diego are attended by friends who support our mission. However, yesterday, the majority were newcomers. This format, connecting with other nonprofits in nature, fills me with joy in a way traditional venues cannot. Sharing vulnerability in these landscapes fosters a deeper connection to ourselves, each other, and the healing spaces around us. It’s National Pet Day! 🐶🐱 Numa, the Kumeyaay Lake Campground Camp Host’s dog, and Serra, the Chief Rodent Control Officer at the Visitor Center are the beloved pets of Mission Trails. We love our pets, and today is an opportunity to learn how they can impact the environment. 🐱 Did you know that outdoor pet cats have contributed to the extinction of 63 species of birds, mammals, and reptiles in the wild? We keep Serra inside the Visitor Center to keep her and wildlife safe. 🐶 Dogs off leash in outdoor spaces pose a threat to themselves and others. Keeping your dog on leash at the park protects them from rattlesnakes, ticks, traffic, and poison oak.
