And we’re off to Japan! I was pretty clueless to the importance of Japan in the renaissance of denim. That is until I read the book Ametora by @wdavidmarx kindly lent to me by Jim from @starfishvintage. Evisu was one of the first companies to plunder the archives of Levis and other classic brands during the early 1990s, bringing back some of the quality that the American manufacturers had begun to sacrifice in search of a quick buck. With American denim factories now all but shut, it’s to the Far East – and mills such as the one operated by Kaihara – that we look to for that superior craftsmanship. Which brings me to this jacket. This is a hybrid Type 1/2 jacket from Evisu, most likely from the early 2000s, featuring a cinch back and contrast yellow/orange stitching, plus their signature white “gull wing” insignia. That logo was painted on by hand for the early models, but I think is unlikely to be so here, as this jacket was made under licence in Italy. Although I’m usually a medium, I’ve sized-up to a large for this one. The jacket fits well in the body, but the arms are very long, requiring a cuff turn-back – no easy thing with denim as rigid and raw as this. Out of all my jackets, this is the only one my eldest teenage daughter thinks is actually quite cool.
