The hat I've been wearing most in the past couple of months (it's warm - but not too warm) is this beret I crocheted several years ago. I got the pattern from a circa 1928 magazine called The Needlewoman (2nd and 3rd images). The pattern is very basic and I think I did my own interpretation of the stripes, but I really like the shape. Crochet (which I don't do very often and am not very good at) is great for making a firm fabric. I can't remember what brand of yarn I used, but know its a 4ply wool. I love the description in the magazine which says the beret style hat though 'seldom to be seen in smart milliners, ...is worn by most fashionable women'. It then goes on to say that the style is thought to have been popularised by the Prince of Wales ( Edward VIII - a bit of a trendsetter in his time!) whilst playing golf in Biarritz as a nod to traditional Basque headwear!
