New findings on the Surfside building collapse are bringing to light that there were deviations from the design requirements in the slab reinforcing bars centered over the vertical columns. While this in in no way conclusive as to the exact cause of this tragedy, it does give an indication as to what it may have been. Researchers are still also looking into other potential culprits, such as sink holes or vibrations caused by nearby construction. At the end of the day, it may turn out that it was a combination of factors that just happened to coincide to produce the unthinkable. Partly driven by the demand for apartments and business space of all the new people moving to Florida.
