Joining the city walls from Bootham bar, heading towards Monkgate, you are instantly drawn to spectacular views of the Minster, Purey-Cust Lodge and Grays Court Hotel. But if you turn left to look over the battlements, you'll see the roofscape of Gillygate, and the only portion of the city walls where buildings line the outer aspect. At the heart of the street itself, numbers 30-36 Gillygate make a significant contribution to the historic streetscape. Although they're not listed, as is the case with much of Gillygate, these buildings demonstrate a wide variety of styles, with bold neoclassical-styled round-headed windows on the first floor and attractive dormers in the roof. Number 34 is home to eco-friendly homeware store @heimayork whilst contemporary barbers @thegoodfolksyork are at no 36. As part of their Researching and Documenting Buildings preservation course, taught by Professor of Historic Preservation, Christina Butler, sophomore students spend the semester writing full preservation plans for two Charleston area sites. This spring, students are focused on The Knights of Columbus Building (1907) downtown and St. John's Catholic Church (1929) in Park Circle. Each project begins with site visits, measuring, and condition assessments. Students then delve deeper into each project's specifics by way of in-class workshops, lectures, and trips to various regional archives. By semester's end, their work culminates info full preservation plans for each building, providing the sites' stewards with condition assessments and remediation plans to restore and preserve each structure for future generations. I thought I’d share with everyone that with all the opportunities coming up in the preservation world, I have decided to form a new company, Andrew Ownbey Restoration LLC. When we lose an old building, we lose not just the architect's vision for its exterior, but all the other elements as well, like internal layouts, which can reveal so much about our social history. We lose all the little design features we all too often take for granted, but which make each building unique, like sculptures, and tilings and fonts and metalwork. We lose the daily reminders of the skills of all the stonemasons, sculptors, engineers, metalworkers and labourers who came together to make the architect's vision a reality. We lose the collective memory of the building's place in the communities which surround it and all personal memories of what the building meant to everyone whose life it touched, both good and bad. #dryrot We opened this project up, knowing that previous repairs/ treatments had been done by another preservation contractor to remove the Dry-rot outbreak prior to us starting. This is another example of why it's important to make sure the contractor you use is competent. The surveyor who attends your property at first is only as good as the men he puts into your house to do the repairs. Working on the redevelopment of the HVB Tower, our main challenge was the exact preservation of the building’s external appearance while meeting the demands of a modern, energy-efficient building envelope. The formerly single-shell façade was replaced by a double-shell façade element developing towards the interior. The dismantled façade elements were sorted and separated. While most of the non-reusable parts could be recycled, the aluminium balustrade panels were cleaned and reused for the development of the exterior shell at the former location. The perforation of the elements for the fresh air supply was imperceptibly integrated into the façade. Improving the energy efficiency of the systems engineering allowed for the implementation of an up-to-date, user-friendly climate-control concept in the ostensibly unchanged shell. The refurbishment of the tower was completed in 2016, followed in 2022 by the overall completion of the complex, which also includes two low-rise buildings. Details of the ceiling in the main hall. When we first entered the building in 2020, the ceiling was in bad condition. The initial plan was to preserve parts of the ceiling and the stucco decorations. During a site visit, it was discovered that the sheet material was starting to deteriorate, revealing extensive damage. The stucco decorations needed to be removed and it was decided to carefully remove and save them. The ceiling moldings were damaged and had to be recreated. Our client was very keen to retain the traditional features within this flat. The window bay panelling showed minor signs of decay penetrating the rear surface of the panels, we took the panels away to our workshop cut off and buffed out and signs of decay without affecting the face of the panels then chemically sterilised the timbers using a deep penetrating borocol treatment thus preserving the original features #buildingpreservation #specialistcontractor Www.smpsdampproofing.co.uk

As a young architectural graduate, Hector assisted with major restoration work on Cooma Cottage, the home of Hamilton Hume. Today he was back in Yass to discuss a short program of conservation for the Cottage, which is well cared for by the National Trust. The works are to be carried out in preparation for the Trust’s planned commemoration later this year of the 200th anniversary of the journey to Port Phillip undertaken by Hume with William Hovell.
