New meats. These are Federal 595S 185/60 13 on 13x5 Minators versus Westlake 155/80 13 on stock steelies. The wheel gap is a bit large due to the fact that the front is partially unweighted because of my jack stand placement. I’m excited to give these a good test, but I need to—ya know—finish my complete rebuild of the rear end. Let’s talk alignment: this weekend, I plan to set up strings and check my current toe settings, since sticky tires have revealed some toe-out-like driving characteristics that I never felt on regular tires. So, here’s where I need some wisdom from you esteemed folks. What is the optimal toe-in setting for a Sprite? Would wider/stickier tires require a change in toe settings? If so, how much and for what reason? I need some help here. Meatly under a Texas sky. Halfway there: front stud conversion is done and I needed to move the car over in the garage for more workspace, so of course I took it on a quick loop. I learned a few things: 1) Hoosier race tires are amazingly sticky, 2) Sticky tires reveal that I need to setup strings to dial in the toe, as it gets a bit squirrelly at certain speeds. Also, when was the last time you actually laughed out loud from a car upgrade? Just completed my wood under dash section and fitted into the Spitfire. Perfect fit! I made a pattern first by spraying a light coat of contact glue onto tin foil then sticking it to the lower dash tunnel. Then in neat lines sticking masking tape to the tin foil. Pull the tinfoil and masking tape off together in one piece. Trim the masking to the tin foil pattern and transfer pattern to thin ply wood base and cut and trim . Then I made my own ply from off cuts of thin American oak. Trim to shape, sand and coat with semi gloss. Maybe it’s a little light and I may change in the future. Had to get a little help today with help from Steve and Robin from Classic Car Clinic, as I had to replace the clutch throw out bearing, and really needed a hoist, ended up turning around the drive shaft as some one previous had put it around the wrong way. New universal joint needed too. Then we replaced all the old thin wheel studs with land rover Freelander studs and dropped my new Mintor Minilte wheels on. Still have some work, bit of grinding to do on the front wheels as the Old hub is tapered and a little larger wheel hub hole. Wheels are 14x6 195 they certainly fill out the guards. In the coming weeks I’ll get into replacing all the front end bushes bit by bit. Then a wheel alignment and camber adjustments.
