Austin Healey Sprite (MK 1) - A very small open top sports car made in the UK from 1958 to 1961 with a magnificently unique shape. Affectionally known as the “frogeye” and “bugeye” in the UK and US due to its distinctive headlight positioning, the Sprite was quite a “cute” car for its time. This example restored as a vintage racer, has a complete engine rebuild doubling power from 43HP to 90HP, a massive increase considering this car had been lightened to just a featherweight 1900lbs. Well it was another cracking Spa event with friends, despite the chilly weather. We qualified 30th out of 65 runners for the Spa 3 hour in the 63 yr old Healey 3000, car running like a dream, we got up to 12th overall, then dropped back to 17th after the second pit stop. @mjwt1 was flying, putting in 2.59sec laps, before we crossed the finish line seconds before the flag dropped, so had to do one more rotation but we ran out of fuel on that last lap! Bummer. But we had fun and Mr T turned 60 and we’ll be back and do it all again some other day! X #spasummerclassic #austinhealey #keephealeysracing

The last day of engine week, today I am posting the before and after pictures of 4 random projects. The first pair was my first project here in the Netherlands a late 70’s Jeep 258. I learned a valuable lesson on this project was to absolutely measure everything, while measuring the valve guides I came across one that had an oversized valve in it. In this cylinder head the guides are cast into the head. This required a special insert be installed in the opening. From that day forward I came across other crazy things that I would never do myself but others did. The second pair of pictures is a Corvette LS 5.7. This was removed from a flooded car, it had extensive water damage, This engine was going into a street rod so it got a full powder coat and revised fuel injection system The third pair was a worn Austin Healey 100/4. In addition to bringing it up to M specs we updated the oil sealing to modern specifications so it will be a dry AH 100/4 The next set is a stock 454 from a mid 70’s Chevy C-10 truck, the truck is getting the restomod treatment and needed some more go with the show. Up for sale is a beautiful little Austin-Healey Sprite MKIV from 1968, with the venerable 1275cc inline 4 A Series engine mated to a 4-speed, 3-synchromesh gearbox. The original Sprite was introduced in 1958, with the MKIV being produced from 1966 to 1971. As well as the larger (65hp) engine, the MKIV benefited from a fixed, foldable roof and separate brake and clutch master cylinders for enhanced safety. This example is in lovely condition, inside and out. It's a great looking car, benefiting from deep red paintwork and bright chrome all round. It is not perfect, showing some paint imperfections and evidence of a paint job in recent years. However, it appears to be very solid, both on top and underneath, with very minimal evidence of tin worm. It shows 15,000 miles, which is not warranted. Inside is a similar story - nicely patinated, with excellent, supple leather seats, great red carpets to match the outside and minimal wear to the wheel and gear shift. Everything on the minimalist dash is present and correct and there is a modern Bluetooth stereo tucked underneath, connected to some discreet speakers on the parcel shelf. There is a 12v power supply neatly installed on the passenger side of the dash, for phone charging. The Sprite benefits from a new hood, which fits very well and looks great. The car also has 5 modern Falken tyres showing minimal wear and an unused one on the spare in the boot. There is also a tonneau cover in good useable condition. Mechanically, the Sprite is in great nick, it starts on the button and benefits from many new parts recently. It idles happily, does not overheat and pulls strongly through the gears, with a lovely rasp from the exhaust. It's incredible to drive - so direct and lightweight, every control responds instantly to your inputs. It just needs using! Jack Rawles in The Peter Collins Trophy keeping the original factory 100S on the black stuff and coming home with a great result of 3rd. In 1955 the Donald Healey Motor Co. decided to build a competition version of the 100 known as the 100S. These came after a series of Special Test Cars that experimented with the final design which finally appeared at the 1955 Sebring 12 Hours. Changes from the standard model included a new Weslake alloy cylinder head with larger valves, a high-lift camshaft, nitride-hardened steel crankshaft and forged-steel connecting rods which helped the model achieve 132 bhp. The 100S was also one of the first cars to be equipped with the Dunlop disc brakes. Additional features included a 20-gallon fuel tank, a stonger chassis and Lucas Le Mans 24 Hour headlights. Externally the 100S was distinguished by its smaller front grill, external fuel filler, louvered hood and perspex front window. On track the Healey achieved some remarkable results. Stirling Moss and Lance Macklin placed 6th at the 1955 Sebring 12-Hours which was the model’s debuting race. Later the car would appear at all the famous races including the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans, 1955 Carrera Panamericana, 1955 Nassau Speed Weeks and Mille Miglia. Only 50 such cars were produced in 1955 (along with five ‘works’ competition cars known as Special Test Cars), of which 37 are thought to survive. 14,634 Austin-Healey 100s were produced.
