🌟 Join us this Arab American Heritage Month as we shine a spotlight on the rich tapestry of experiences and stories within our own team. Here is what one of our Case Managers, Ali wanted to share. "I grew up in Dearborn Heights, MI with my parents who immigrated from Southern Lebanon, and two younger siblings. Growing up my parents would often say, “كنا خلقه الله ونحن كلنا بني ادم لازم نشوف. اللي نحن كلنا مثل بعض.” Which roughly translates to “We are all God’s creations, and we are all Human Beings, we must see that each of us are one in the same”. Now the meaning that was taught to me was, every one of us are all Human, and regardless of who you are, what your religious beliefs you have, the color of your skin, or even your gender identity, we all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. The value of dignity and respect of all people that my parents instilled in me have not only influenced my decision to become a social worker, but also my approach to service. In the face of the ongoing violence in the Middle East, my family and I have felt deeply impacted. This month has brought about a range of emotions, including fear, frustration, and uncertainty. Yet, I believe that it is important to learn from the beauty of diversity and remember that we are all human beings. For a long time, I thought that in order to achieve my professional goals, I needed to distance myself from my heritage and assimilate as an American. However, recent events have led me to recognize and embrace the importance of my cultural identity. As an Arab-American, Male, Social Worker, I know that my unique perspective has gained significance in light of the events unfolding back home. Despite the pain I have experienced over the past few months, I have been motivated to achieve more within the field of Social Work. Though the future remains uncertain, I am proud to call myself an Arab-American, Social Worker. To my fellow Arab community members, I want you to know that your voice has not gone unheard. 🤝 What a moment! Earlier Omar shared his journey and the incredible impact of our youth program. His courage left a lasting impression on everyone in the room. Together, we're sparking change and empowering our youth. 🔷Omar's Story Part 5 At the next monthly re-engagement meeting, Omar excitedly shared his news with the staff and his peers. Everyone, including himself, were overjoyed and proud of his dedication. When his peers in the program asked for his advice on how to follow in his footsteps, Omar assured them that if they stayed focused in the program, they could do it, too. Detroit Youth Grow provided Omar with the opportunity to address the issues in his life that were holding him back, while encouraging him to rise above and strive for greatness for himself. Omar is happy to share about his experiences in the hopes that it will help others like him. 🏛️ Stepping into history! 🌟 Omar is moments away from walking through the doors to share his powerful story and represent the transformative impact of the Detroit Youth Grow Program. His journey is a beacon of hope and resilience. Stay tuned as Omar takes this monumental step forward! 🔷Omar's Story Part 4 The next hurdle he had to face was re-enrolling in school. In another 3 months Omar had another hearing for which he needed to be enrolled in school and maintaining his current progress in the program. Omar and his parents were provided with resources and encouragement from his Mentors to help him officially enroll in school. 🏛️ Last night Omar touched down in DC! 🌟 Today Omar, his mom, and our Children, Youth and Family Director, Marquita are having a quick bite before his big day at the White House. Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes moments! 🔷Omar's Story Part 3 Omar shared his concerns with his Mentors and Lead Case Manager about being removed from the community when his next hearing came around. Because he was able to reach out for help and express his concerns, Omar’s probation worker shared his progress with the court and got him an additional 3 months to continue his progress. During those 3 months, Omar remained focused and leaned on the support of his peers and group staff. After his court hearing, it was reported that Omar began testing negative for substances, and he shared that he was able to focus on the coping skills he had learned in the Substance Abuse Prevention and Education groups to help him refrain from using marijuana. ✈️ Omar and his mom are at the airport, filled with excitement and anticipation for this incredible journey to the White House! 🛫 Their smiles say it all. Follow along as Omar embarks on this remarkable journey. Omar's Story- Part 2 Marijuana was the only constant in his life, and the idea of quitting was not easy, especially because it was present in his environment. Because of this, Omar was facing a Violation of Probation at his next hearing. Once he was placed in Detroit Youth Grow, he became engaged and involved with the staff and his peers. At first, Omar was determined to do just what he needed to earn his stipend, but over time he became more interested in the program and devoted more energy to making friends and growing from his experience. He started to have a happy-go-lucky demeanor, and a better attitude toward the program.
