The Rolling 88s, Random Reflection #43: Connection, Covid and Leonard Cohen. I’d been asked by management to leave the Walmart parking lot a couple of times in the past, but thought I’d give it one more try this fall. The third time proved to be the charm and I played for an hour or so. I had great interactions with a group of PSU students, a young cart herder, and an older couple who sat in their car for a while after they’d done their shopping. I love being able to connect with people through music, whether it’s family, friends, or strangers. One of the significant challenges of the Covid pandemic was the sense of isolation many of us felt, the loss of human connection. Maybe you’ll remember there was a concurrent pandemic of musicians playing on FaceBook Live, myself included. It was something, some form of connection, but no substitute for music experienced live and in person. Sometimes when I’m out playing in the wilds of Walmart, Hannaford, dumps or Dunks, I don’t connect with anybody at all. Maybe it’s the weather. Maybe it’s what I’m playing. Maybe someone’s texting. Maybe someone’s hyper-focused on the task at hand and just wants to get it over with as quickly as possible. Maybe they’ve been referenced in the Leonard Cohen song Hallelujah: “I heard there was a secret chord that David played, and it pleased the Lord, but you don’t really care for music, do you?” That last one’s hard for me to fathom, but I know a few people who are indifferent to music. And once when my band was about to play at a wedding, the bride came up to us and asked us to wait for an hour, then another hour, then a half hour. Before we finally started our truncated gig, she came up to us, apologized and said, “My husband hates music. This is the wedding from hell.” Good luck with your marriage! The Rolling 88s, Random Reflection #37: All About That Brand. The Internet provides a fire hose of content from cat videos, last night’s dinner, and scenic vistas to rock star mishaps, conspiracy theories, and serious social commentary. For better or worse, anyone and everyone can create a brand, myself included. For this traveling piano idea, my early branding steps were coming up with a name, hiring @alphabetarm to design a logo, and buying a Panama hat, both for the look and as protection from the sun. Those were the relatively easy parts of branding. What I’ve found more difficult is deciding “what to leave in, what to leave out” as Bob Seger put it back in the day. I’ve not been a big fan of Motorcycle Week, the uniquely New Hampshire event that draws hordes of motorcyclists from around the country. There’s something about a pack of Harleys, sometimes upwards of 30 at a time, roaring down Main St. or careening down a country road that feels like an invasion. Yet when this friendly group of bikers from Worcester, MA stopped by the Rolling 88s, and I asked if anyone played, this young man got right up and played something beautiful of his own creation. What a surprise! Not all surprises are equal; some can be unpleasant, unwelcome, or even horrific. The Rolling 88s, Random Reflection #5: To Everything There Is A Season. At the request of no one, I’ll be sharing some reflections over the next few weeks, things that have occurred to me over the eight years of hauling a 1940 Aeolian Wheelock baby grand around to various places outdoors. By mid-October, I’m ready to bring the piano into the house. There’s a fair amount of physical exertion which takes a toll as well as a certain angst that creeps in. A line from Dylan’s song Queen Jane Approximately lodges in my brain: “When you’re tired of yourself and all of your creations…” Yeah, that would be me, Bob. By May, I’m usually eager to get ‘er back on the trailer and head out, but who knows what 2024 will bring. That said, I sure do appreciate all the support I’ve had, both live and on social media. With the temperatures falling, today was the last day of the Rolling 88s season. I decided to make as many stops as I could before the piano comes off the trailer and into the house for the winter. 1st stop: The drive up window at Northway Bank and a quick round of Name That Tune 2nd stop: Sandwich transfer station. Quiet for a while with just me and Smitty there so I practiced a bit until a nice émigré from the UK came along 3rd stop: Willoughby Ridge. I wanted to see if Charlie E’s oxen were more or less responsive than a certain cow 4th stop: Plymouth transfer station. First and only visit this season which was duly noted by the management. The manager of the New Hampton facility, Tom O’Shea was super friendly and as it turns out, an avid and accomplished drummer. I suggested he play the big garbage can (first clip), but he went and got a joint compound bucket instead and went at it (second clip). The Rolling 88s and I voyaged to a new (for us) dump today. Hard to assess how the Holderness dump stacks up to those we’ve visited in Meredith, Sandwich, and Plymouth, but here goes. Set-up was substandard, but there was a legit swap shop and apparently a snack distributor regularly leaves boxes w/individual bags of undistributed chips. Scored some Lay’s barbecue chips so that’s on the plus side. Pretty noisy overall, but the front loader’s beeper was in tune w/the piano (F5) so I could play along in D minor. Worker was friendly and tolerant of my wiseass response to his “I listen to everything” remark. Site visit! In addition to playing random parking lots, dumps, and drive-throughs, I do actual gigs with the Rolling 88s…wedding ceremonies and cocktail hours, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Whenever possible, I like to check out the terrain ahead of time and figure out how to maneuver the trailer into position, level it, and keep it from moving. One of the things I like about having the piano on a trailer is being at eye level with passersby when I’m playing. If someone wants to stop and talk, or get up onto the bench and play, it’s more likely to happen than if it were up higher…like on the back of a truck. But every now and then, someone will say “Hey, you’re that guy with the piano on the back of a truck!” Maybe they’re thinking of Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces (1970), angrily banging away on a beat-up, out-of-tune upright in the middle of a traffic jam.
