For Sunday supper, we made from-scratch Stromboli, and mamma mia, they were molto deliziosi! 👌😘 If you grew up in the NYC-NJ area, you may have a certain fondness for the Italian-American red sauce version of Italian foods, and for us, there are few things tastier than stromboli hot out of the oven, with a zippy homemade marinara, accompanied by ice-cold white wine or Prosecco (we had Pinot Grigio this time). These were made with our go-to pizza dough recipe, with dried oregano folded in for extra flavor. After rising, the dough is stretched out to a rectangle and layered with fillings. This version had fresh baby spinach, chopped artichoke hearts, thin-sliced salami and provolone, some pepperoni, a handful of shredded mozzarella, and grated Parmesan. Once layered, the dough is folded over on itself, pinched shut and rolled seam side-down, brushed with olive oil, and sprinkled with a bit more parm and some white sesame seeds. Some kind of magic happens in the oven, so the spinach cooks down and absorbs the flavor of the artichokes, the cheeses melt and merge with the meats, and everything stratifies into an intense, flavor-packed celebration of tasty ingredients enclosed in a crisp, yet tender pizza-like crust.
