In 1994, I was hired by Euromotorsports as Dave Kudrave’s race engineer in the team’s second IndyCar entry at the Long Beach Grand Prix. It was my first IndyCar job. Dave and I were thrown into the deep end, having not tested or met each other before the first practice. We were running an older ’92 Lola Chevy with the oldest version of the Illmor engine, Illmor A. Other teams were using a ’93 or ’94 chassis with later Illmor C and D engines. We did not set a time fast enough to qualify for the race, joining Hiro Matsushita and Johnny Unser on the sideline. We went to the next race at Phoenix Raceway and failed to qualify by .020 seconds to Mauricio Guglemin. Johnny Unser and Mark Smith also failed to qualify. In one respect, it was a relief for us since Euromotorsports did not have enough pit equipment to race two cars. In 1983, Electramotive Engineering built its own 1/7th scale, moving ground plane wind tunnel in anticipation of entering the IMSA GTP series with Nissan support. After research, it was decided the tunnel needed to have a moving ground plane to properly simulate ground effects. A wide sanding belt was used along with homemade steel rollers and commercial pillow block bearing supports to create the moving ground. A mechanical variable drive system was used to control the belt speed and match it to the wind speed, both values being displayed on the control panel. In my book, Developing a Champion: The Electramotive Nissan GTP Story, I devote a chapter to explain how the wind tunnel was built and how aerodynamicist Yoshi Suzuka and the team used it to develop massive amounts of downforce exploiting ground effect aerodynamics. The 9” x 12”, 444-page, coffee table-style book chronicles the design and development of the Nissan GTP car that dominated the IMSA GT series during the late 1980’s. Over 600 images, including professional photography, never-before seen in-shop photos, technical diagrams, and drawings compliment the text as it describes how the team converted an aerodynamically unstable, crash-ridden design into a multi-time championship winning machine.
