There’s serious summer vibes in Denmark right now, and to top it all of we currently have a couple of public holidays, which means 3-day weekend for me! 👌🏻😊 The last couple of days have been WARM, and my appartment is notoriously difficult to cool down, so spending a couple of hours on the road in the Mustang with the windows down was just what I needed to cool myself down! 😅❤️ I’ve been writing a lot about my current concerns with the cooling system in the Mustang, but the fact of the matter is that I’ve been driving in hot conditions the last two days without any issues, so I’ll leave it be for now. She runs pretty good as she is. She got some minor mechanical noises going, but they’ve been there for a while now, and they’re not getting any worse, so I’m pretty sure it’s nothing critical 🤞🏻 The flasher relay have begun to stick in the off position, so I’ve had to tap it a couple of times to get it working again. The previous one acted the same before it completely died, so I’ve ordered a replacement. Aaah yes… spring cleaning! 👌🏻😅 I guess that’s a good way to spend a sunny sunday. But despite the sunny weather it was COLD outside today! 🥶 I managed to get the upper surfaces, windows, front, rear and wheels mostly done, but had to call it before I got to the sides. I suffer from joint and wrist fatigue/pains, and doing the entire car can be quite uncomfortable for me. Will have to do the sides another day. I was also on the ground to check up on the rust repairs I made some time ago at the bottom of the car, and I’m happy to report that they hold up surpricingly well. The bottom looks great where I grinded and painted back then. Would love tp give the entire bottom that treatment at some point. She will need some bodywork done at some point though, because she does have rust damage, but it’s not critical right now. Had the golden trouble maker out for a little refueling cruise today. It had been sunny all day while I was at work, but it had become really cloudy when I was leaving the office. I had a couple of things that I needed to tend to at home, so I wasn’t really planning on taking her out, but as per usual I couldn’t keep myself away on a dry and semi warm day. So I went to get her, and drove her the long, scenic route to one of the numorous Shell stations we’ve become well aquainted with for a tankful of fresh octanes. Pushed the poor car a little. That little 289 sounds like it’s dying during coldstart, but when it is warmed up it runs like it thinks it’s a Nascar on crack! 😅 She still has a little trouble getting rid of all the heat in the system. Mind you, I did push her today, but the system should be able to take it. I do have a good idea about what needs to be done. Radiator cleaning AND some modification to the thermostat! The radiator cleaning speaks for itself. The thermostat thing is because the old thermostat was a high flow unit, while the replacement is a standard unit. I think boring a couple of holes in the thermostat flange, so it always allows some flow through, would help dissipate the heat buildup. Would be a easy mod to try out. Anyway… Got my little V8 dose and still managed to get all the other stuff I had to do DONE! The last 2 months have been crazy busy! It suddenly dawned on me today that I hadn’t checked in on the Mustang since I prepared it for winter storage back in November! 😳 Decided to pay her a visit today 😊 She’s just waiting for an excuse to get out and tear up some roads again! 😂 I’m planning on having her serviced soon - the usual fresh oil, filters and breakcheck season start rutine 😊 She’s dripping a little from the radiator flush valve. It started doing that last year. Not too critical, but I need to have it fixed before too long. One last startup before winter storage! 👌🏻 Yeah, season officially ended last week, and I never got around to prepairing the ol’ gal for storage, which has been nagging me constantly the last couple of days. The most important part is always ensuring proper frost protection of the coolant. The storage is not heated, and while it rarely gets frosty in there, it would just majorly suck to blow the freeze plugs in the smallblock if we get a tough winter. We had some seriously low temperatures last winter, so… Anyway, got her fired up and warmed up to running temperature. Then I checked the coolant values, pulled some water, added some more antifreeze coolant and let her run some more. Should be good for -18 C now, which should be more than plenty. It was nice hearing the comforting plopping sound of the little V8 one more time. Despite all her flaws and shortcomings she never fails to make my heart skip a beat. Sounded so good! ❤️ I feel like I owe her a good cleaning/polishing/nursing session. Sunday. A sunny autumn day. I had to take advantage of that! I wasn’t sure how much of cruise I would be able to go on today. I left the Mustang with an only semi-tested cooling system after I replaced the second faulty thermostat. She still has a bunch of other problems too, but… yeah… Anyway, she started up without any problem. She still has obnoxious lifter knock on start-up, but once she warms up she runs great. Temperature was great throughout the cruise. Most of the time it was steady on 180 degres, with the occasional climb to 190 degres during hard pulls and slow inner city cruising. I’m happy with that. She has some “clunk”-ish sounds which I’m sure is coming from the clutch pedal assembly, and the front tires needs to be balanced, but besides all those things she just drives great 😊 Spent 4 hours on the road. Right… thermostat part 2! 🤔 Had a chat with a colleague who has some experience with american cars. Based on what I was experiencing with the replacement thermostat he suggested that I might have gotten a bad part. It had crossed my mind that the new one could be faulty, but I wasn’t sure until I had that chat with my colleague. I went home and wrote an e-mail to the shop I bought it from. They replied that they would send me new one for free. Awesome customer service! 👍🏻 I received the replacement earlier this week, and today I did the swap. It got a bit messy because I didn’t sufficiently drain the radiator before I pulled the thermostat housing off, but at least it went pretty smooth overall. I took the change to use the same gasket again, and so far it works without any leaks. The first test drive seemed promising. Temperature was lower, and seemed to stay there. When pushing the engine the temperature rises a couple of degrees and then slowly climb down again as the radiator dissipates the heat. I only went on a short first test drive. Drove home to my parents to borrow my dads air compressor to blow dirt and dead insects out of the radiator. This is something I should have done long ago, because the radiator is dirty! I’ve just kept postponing it since cooling never was an issue. Got a lot of dust, dirt and exoskeleton banished from radiator and air filter. The I went on another drive. I took it easy at first. Straight up cruising. Temperature seemed good an stable at 182 most of the time. I pulled in at a gasstation, filled the tank and went back on the road. This time i starting pushing the engine. Hard! Temperature rised with every acceleration, but seemed to slowly fall again afterwards. On the last leg of my small testdrive however, the temperature seemed to be stuck at 190 once again. Not sure why? It was a super nice and warm september day today. I absolutely had to take the Mustang out for a cruise. I was working late, but the sun was still high when I left work. The days are getting shorter FAST at this time of the year here in the north. Got a beautiful, long and cozy evening cruise, which ended with me cruising through the hometown, and pulling in at an empty store parkinglot to take some sunset pictures. Afterwards, on my way back to the storage, she completely flooded and came to a halt in the middle of one of the main junctions in the area! 😂 It took me completely by surprise, and in my semi panic I managed to flood her even more. Luckily a kind soul offered to help me push her into a busstop right around the corner, so I atleast didn’t block the traffic. I let her air out for a good 15-20mins, and then pushed the gas pedal completely to the floor and turned the key, which happily made her roar back to life pretty effortlessly. She drove back home to the storage without any more fuss. So… time to get that faulty thermostat fixed! 😊 Left work early today to go wrenching. I had a pretty good idea about what to do, but I did Google how to do it before I went! 😂 10 year ownership and still a mechanical n00b! 🙈 Anyway… It went pretty smoothly. Started by emptying the radiator. Then I took off the piping, which required a bit of fidling, but they came off without too much of a fight! 😅 The housing itself popped off cleanly. I was a bit surprised by the old thermostat. It’s clearly a very old design, which makes me wonder how old it actually is? I haven’t fiddled with the thermostat in the 10 years I’ve owned the car, and I don’t know if the previous owner did anything to it, but I doubt he did. The car was totally rebuilt at some point in 2005 before it came to Denmark, but the design is probably older then that 🤔 Nevermind, it’s out! 😊 I did some quick cleaning of the sealing surface of the housing. The part is actually in pretty good condition considering the age. There’s some light pitting, but nothing critical. I assembled the housing with a new gasket. It was a bit fiddly, but I got it without too much hassle. Everything went back together easy. I filled the radiator again and fired up the engine. No leaks! 🤘🏻😁 Not too bad for this mechanical n00b! 😉 The engine can cool itself again now. However, it is running 10 degrees hotter than before, but it does so steadily. I guess I just need a thermostat that activates at 10 degrees less. The new thermostat is a 180 fahrenheit unit. I didn’t know which kind of thermostat I had been running during the last 10 years, so it was a complete shot in the dark when I chose this one. Might buy a new one and swap it again, but I recon that I could drive the rest of the season with the new one without any problems 🤷🏼♂️ I had a little testdrive with the new thermostat. I wanted another “big roadtrip” in the Mustang. Last time I went to the northern most point of Denmark. This time I had another destination in mind in pretty much the opposite direction - south! Or really south-west-ish? Anyway… in the city of Esbjerg, there is a sculpture at the beach called “Mennesket ved havet” (Man by the sea), which is basically 4 tall white figures looking out at the sea. I’ve been to Esbjerg before - the last time was for a SlipKnot concert in 2018 - and I’ve visited the sculpture before a LONG time ago, but it seemed like a good destination for some cruise shenanigans. The drive down there was super smooth, and went without a hitch. I got a picture with the Mustang at the sculpture, which was kind of my goal for the trip. I even cruised the local harbour. The trip home however took an unexpected turn! About a quarter of the way back the Mustang started running a bit hot. Nothing too alarming at first, but ultimately I had to pull in at a mall parkinglot, where I could let the engine cool down a little and check the water level in the radiator. From there I was able to continue for a bit, but about half way home the heat once again became too much, and I had to pull in at a rest stop to let the poor thing cool off again. I repeated this 4 times, and the 4th time it was proper boiling and spitting. I was still a long way from home, at a random rest stop in an unfamiliar neighbourhood. I opted to call for help. I have a sort of “AAA” service included with my insurance. So yeah… I got a bit more adventure then I had initially asked for, but at this point I consider it “making memories” with my dear old pile of junk Mustang! 😂 Naaah… I still love that car so damn much! ❤️❤️❤️ As to what caused the problem; I’m suspecting a dead/defunctional thermostat. I’ve often done some long cruises with the Mustang, but today I did the one which brought us the farthest away from home we’ve ever been! The northern most point of Denmark, “Grenen”, became a spur-of-the-moment choice of destination. With a distance of roughly 200 kilometers from my home area it is by far the farthest the Mustang has ever been from home, since I usually stick to cruising within a certain radius of home. I guess I’m just sick and tired of always driving the same routes, or maybe I’ve just gotten more gutsy with age? Anyway, the Mustang is just a relentless trooper. She didn’t bat an eye when I drove unto the highway, and had her sitting at a stable 75 mph for well over an hour! Temps and oil pressure were great, and she just ate up traffic. To this day it still surprices me how stable and comfortable that car is on the highway. I think the highway did her good too. She felt awesome and sounded great the entire trip! 🥰 Okay, she did run a little hot on the way home, but that was just the radiator that needed a quick refill, and I always bring water with me for that reason. Once refilled the temp went down and stayed down for the rest of the drive home. Ended the day with a little sunset picture. I’m very much feeling the post-Copenhell blues still. Add to that a good portion of general fatigue and a buttload of allergies and you get one tired, moody, irritated asshole; yes, me! Decided to do something else than playing couch potato all day, so I took the Mustang for a spin. It semi helped. The old girl felt a little tired today, but she still troopered on as usual. Typical my luck I hit a couple of branches that was sticking out into the road and got a couple of ugly scratches down the side. Drove home to my parents and borrowed some “paint scratch remover” buffing compound from my dad and got the worst visual scratches removed. There’s only two places where there’s still visible scratches. Shit happens… Just not feeling it today. I have no idea about the length of todays adventure, but it was a proper long haul! I wanted to see water, so we drove out to the eastcoast and cruised along the shoreline. Discovered some new beautiful roads that I’m sure we’ll be visiting again at some point. I knew most of the roads though, so I had a pretty good idea about where we were going. Beautiful weather today 😊 Well… atleast on my location anyway! 😅 We had a little family meetup at an awesome little model railway park today. I made the trip in the Mustang, and it was a beautiful drive through some gorgeous scenary. The model railway park itself was just awesome! The trains were all built by members of the railway club who runs the place. I got to talk with a couple of the people, and was even invited back stage to have a look at the inner working of the facility. The trains are built in scale 1:6 and 1:8 depending on model. They have electric, diesel powered and steam trains. Only the electric ones were out today, but they are hosting a special steam power event soon where the steam locomotives will be fired up, so I might have to come back then 😊 One of the club members also showed me and my brother one of the diesel locomotives up close, and he even fired it up for us which was super cool 😃 It was a fun day out for sure, and it was awesome to chill out with the family again 😊 Made the drive home extra long to get some quality time with the Mustang. I thoroughly enjoyed driving that old sweetheart again! ❤️ I think the next time I get her out it’ll be for a good cleaning! Well… the Mustang still has issues. She starts and drives, but the experience is quite lackluster at the moment. She still has lifter knock at coldstart - not as bad as before, but it’s still there. Damn! It’s getting cold outside! 🥶 The end of the Mustang season is fast approaching. I’ve been giving the Mustang a break lately. Fuel is expensive, and I really should save up some money to get the floor and the dying valve lifter fixed. She’s still driving great though 😍 It’s incredible how nimble she is despite being a 58 year old fully manual car. It’s so fun to drive her through the city! 😋 The weather was incredible today. Clear blue sky with a warm autumn sun. Drove with the window down for most of the trip. Ended up at my parents place (again!) and my mom invited me to stay for dinner, so we ate and chatted for a bit. Pulled my baby of the lift today. Wasn’t really planning on taking her for a drive, but since it was a nice and warm clear-blue-sky kind of day I figured “why not?” and went to town. The engine still has that lifter noise from a lifter loosing oil pressure when engine is cold. It disappears when it warms up, so no big deal, but annoys the hell out of me. I let the engine warm up and then I did some solid accelleration pulls with high revs. Besides sounding and feeling awesome I actually think it did the engine good. It sounded REALLY good and healthy at the end of the day. I’m not counting on the lifter noise being gone, but I hope it will have helped it? So… I pulled this golden trouble maker out in the sun today, which was lovely as always. But… I heard a clunk when driving over some twigs on the road, and wanted to make sure that they haven’t done any damage on the bottom. No apparent twig damage. I did however find RUST! In a bad way! 😥 Now, this car had been coated in some sort of rust protection a long time ago, and during all my years as owner the bottom have been looking healthy. The rust protection, however, have cracked and started to fall of in large flakes, exposing a rusty surface underneath! 😰 I know these cars are notorious for bad floor rust, and of cause my mind exploded with bad thoughts for a brief second, but… I recon this can be fixed if I act NOW! 🤔 My summer holidays starts this friday, so I must find a couple of days to get the bottom cleaned for any rust, and then painted with some rust preventative paint. Guess I just got myself a summer project! 😅😰 Hopefully this can be fixed without any need for bodywork or panel replacement. There’s just something about the low rumble of a V8 that really helps me gathering my thoughts. Sunny sunday ☀️ I needed to make piece with the Mustang! I’ve been a little disappointed with her ever since our last ride. It was just the combination of the recently developed none-critical ticking noise and that she drove like crap last time. I’ve been childishly stewing about it for the last couple of days. Didn’t really feel like taking her out at first today, but I came to my senses and decided that enough was enough! GO. DRIVE. HER. NOW! I know she’s just a car, but it seriously felt like she wanted to make up for the last time too. Fired right up without any hesitation. The ticking was there the first 2-3 minutes, but quickly faded and almost disappeared when the engine warmed up. She just ran great today. She truly is my happy place ❤️ I need to watch my temper a bit and not get so upset when she’s not running 100%! I’ve had her for nearly 9 years, but it still seems that I haven’t realised that she’s an old car. I drive her pretty hard at times - mechanical issues are bound to be (and have been) part of this ownership/relationsship! I love that car. So… decided to fire up the Mustang after work to see if the ticking noise she starting having at coldstart was still there. It is. Luckily my friend who always helps me with the mechanical stuff was there, so he got a chance to hear the noise for himself. He thinks it’s a lifter that’s going bad, which certainly fits with the symptoms. Soft knock during coldstart, fading to ticking after a couple of minutes, and then almost completely disappears. I tried topping of the oil before I started her, just to see if some fresh oil in the system would do anything 🤷🏼♂️ Also still suspecting that the fuel pump is adding to the engine noise I hear, so I’m awfully tempted to swap it. Had some more Mustang time today. Just because I wanted to. And can. 😊 Ever since I drove her to band practice last sunday, and let her rip om the freeway, I’ve noticed that the engine have developed a slight ticking noise. It freaked me out at first, but I think its actually just the fuel pump? Not 100% sure yet, but the sound is coming from that area. The pump is at least 9 years old. Probably a lot older if not actually original? 🤔 I’ve been suspicious of that pump for a while now and close to replacing it more than once over the last couple of years. We’ll see what happens. The ticking is most notable when coldstarting. At running temperatur it’s almost gone. Sunday. Band practice day! It had been over a month since the band last were together. Sometimes life just gets in the way, you know? 😊 I think I speak for all of us when I say that it was an absolute pleasure to jam again. We pretty much got a complete song going, and it is awesome! 🤘🏻😁 The sun was shining on a clear blue sky, no wind and warmth in the air, so I decided to drive to band practice in the Mustang - my second Mustang trip this season ❤️ The guys in the band got a kick out of seeing the ol’ girl. I’ve shown them pictures of her, but this was the first time they saw her IRL 😉 After band practice I drove home to my parents, where I gave her a very quick clean. Mostly to get the dust off that had collected while she was in storage during the winter. I still need to give her a proper cleaning! Afterwards I drove into the big city to do my usual “see me/showoff” cruise through the city center. On the way back home to the storage I took this picture with me, the Mustang and my trusty Dingwall bass. Couldn’t wait any longer! I had to bring the Mustang out of storage today! 😍😍😍 Had a nice little drive round the neighbourhood. So… Mustang season officially starts tomorrow! 😍 Only one problem though… the street are coated with salt! 😩 I guess I just have to be patient. It wouldn’t surprise me if I have to wait another month or so, but atleast I know she’s fully serviced and ready to rock, so as soon as the conditions will allow it I’ll take her on a good, long cruise somewhere! 😊❤️ Paid her a visit at the storage space after work today. Haven’t seen her since, like, november or something like that? 🤔 I usually swing by atleast once every month normally, but amidst all the working from home and the covid-crazyness I figured it was best to just keep some distance out of respect for my friend and his family, who owns and lives at the storage facility.
