Final prep before putting the case back together. Clean the RHD case surfaces and fit the new shell bearings. Bit of before and after shot. Wet and dry paper to get those surfaces nice and clean. Also cleaned and fitted new O seals to the thru bolts. Stopped there for today as when you start the process of putting the case back together you have to keep going until it’s all torqued up. That’s mainly due to the locktight 574 sealant on the case face. That shit is £54 a tube and sets like cement when dry. So we need a good hour or two ahead of us before we start that bit. Because I’m an idiot and like stress I’m also doing a part time MSc as well as my stressful job, restoring the 911, family, dog……😂. So now it’s Uni assignment time 😃. Next weekend the case halves will go back together then we’ll start building the heads. Progress is progress. Sometimes you have to adapt and overcome! The very well written Wayne Dempsey book has been extremely helpful for all aspects of the mechanical strip down and rebuild of the car so far. Especially the engine! He shows the brackets needed to hold up the timing chain and con rods. I went off and google searched how much they are to buy. To my shock they were around £160 in total. They are literally strips of shaped flexible steel! Wayne details the dimensions in his book suggesting making your own. So that’s what we did! Used roof strap steel at £10 a roll! Took about 20 minutes to make them and hey presto they worked ace! Adapt and overcome. And don’t give robbing gits on the interweb unnecessary hard earned cash 😂. Case goes back together next week. Got a friend over for lunch so time is short today. All progress though. Daz finishing off the outer sill and jacking point this week. Needs to be right so the door gaps are right. We’d worked out that the drivers door must have got caught in the wind at some point and bent back. Twisted the hinges and door. Combine that with the shit awful earlier sill repair the drivers door gaps were horrendous. Daz has gotten them nice straight and even now. It’s the time it takes to get it right. Dints the shit out of my wallet but hey ho. Has to be done😂. My OCD could not handle shite door gaps! It’s this detail that will show once it’s in paint. Engine rebuild continues today. With the minor inconvenience of my side garage door deciding to leak in rainwater. Knobhead door. So today was remove the conrods and replace the bearings. Didn’t have a huge amount of time so that’s all we got done. Progress is progress. Fiddly work popping the old shell bearings out and fitting the new. Then locktight and torque it all back up. Good fun. And as she has on numerous other occasions, she extracted a wee bit more blood from me! I think she may be a vampire 😂. More progress on the floor and bulkhead. Daz had to fab up that lip that will accept each floor pan section. It was completely rotted and gone. I’ve said before we think that car sat for years with water ingress just sitting in the foot and floor wells. Rotted it all away. It’s slow meticulous work but it’s needed! Also shortly a million gallons (slight exaggeration) of wax oil will be pumped into the inner sills etc. protect them from rot from the inside before the Floof pans get welded in. Can’t put enough wax oil into voids. It will keep it tot free for years to come. Talking of rot! As you can see the bulkhead behind the footwell is well….f# #ked😂. More progress on the passenger side inner and outer sill. That’s a new jacking point fabricated and fitted. Inner sill protected then outer sill fitted. Passenger door on and off quite a few times to make sure the door fitted right and the sill lined up right before it being welded in place. Once she’s all welded and painted I’ll fill all her voids with a ton of wax oil. Slowly getting there. More progress on the car. The new full rear panel doesn’t come with all of the brackets and captive nuts that hold the rear seats, seatbelts and interior so Daz had to cut them all off the old panel, measure up and weld them in place on the new one. Fiddly work!. Also the rear panel had to be spot welded in to prevent distortion of the panels. Seam welding creates too much heat. Daz doing an ace job. He’s doing it in between other jobs so progress is slower. It was never going to be a sprint! Bit of fabrication update. Once the rear seat tubs and fire wall were cut out (they were absolutely shot) we discover a lot of rot in the main cross member underneath. Hey ho! Welding has finally started on the car. Mate of mine is fitting it in between jobs so has taken a while to start. The whole of the rear seat fire wall and base has now been cut out. Repair patch had been fabricated and welded into the parcel shelf. I'd bought a complete replacement panel for the seatbase tubs and fire wall. Unfortunately more rot was found in the rear struts when the seat tub bases came out. Hey ho. That's the life if a resto. Excited the welding has started though. Bought this rather cool keyring online. It's not official Porsche but cool all the same I think. The US Quarter I found buried under the rubber of the front windscreen (windshield for my US pals) when I was stripping the car. I polished it up, drilled a hole in for a keyring. Engine strip continues. Stripped the heads off on one side today. Seriously that 46mm nut holding the cam shaft is is an utter shit to get off. Got there in the end. Was going really well today until i realised I'd lost my fan wrench so I've ordered a new one. Anyways heat exchangers off, they are in great condition. Started to strip down to the heads. Cam covers off and timing chain covers off. Need to take the fan off hence having to stop. Really impressed with the engine so far. Before the engine goes up onto the stand I wanted to get clutch out. Its not the original clutch but its been in there a long time so has to be changed. Also when the engine is out main bearing and seal will be changed too. I'll change all the seals as part of stripping and rebuilding the engine. Even if they look ok, change them. The engine won't be out very often so do these jobs once. Been a bit quite over the last 2 weeks, I've had Covid! Managed to avoid it for nearly 2 years!. Anyways OK now. So today objective was a straightforward quickish one. Take the starter motor off and split the gear box off the engine. My dad is coming round tomorrow to help me put the engine on the stand so we can strip and rebuild it so I wanted to get these done in advance😃 Both the starter motor and gearbox came off pretty easy. Which i was really surprised by! It's been a while since they've been out of the car! Both seem good. Always soak the bolts in WD40 before you start. Makes it easier. A clean and service should see the starter motor and gearbox bell housing looking ace I think. Harder task getting the engine up onto the stand tomorrow. My garage is getting full! I definitely need a bigger garage! Not a lot of progress during December. Work and family took priority. Getting ready to drop the engine and box out. So today was remove the rear bumper overrides, rear valance , rear corner bumpers and exhaust muffler and get the car up on axel stands. All the rear end of the car is really solid. Delighted with the condition of the OEM muffler. Will clean up really nice. Heat exchangers look ace too. My dad is helping me drop the engine as I don't want to do that alone. Need to get the engine and box out soon as she goes in for welding in February. Bare metalled the roof and then painted it with etch primer. It will be quite a while before it goes to Lee for paint but I wanted to get the shite off the roof and seal it. Few hours on the car today, I've been so busy with work and life over the last few weeks. Today mainly sanding the old paint and vinyl roof glue off, and then cleaning up rusted crappy areas with a wire mop. Found a bit more rot under the tank area. Not the end of the world. That's the interior including all of the soundproofing and heading removed. Filthy job! Soundproofing that was over 50 years old caked on. And the headlining soundproofing was horrible. The car was sat in a field in California for 20 years! You can imagine the dead bugs! Blurgh!🤢🤢🤮. Anyways done now. Also removed most of the flaking paint and glue residue from the roof. More progress today. Stripped down the passenger door removing the window frame and glass. Was a lot easier than the drivers door!! Also got the two front seats out. They are OK shape. The anodised aluminium door window frames are dull and tarnished. Hand polishing them was not working. Do using a dremmel with the compact polishing head and then Autosol polishing compound worked ace😃. This little stretch took about 30 mins. Really happy with how it looks. More polishing needed but it shows it will shine again. 😍. Slow night tonight! Took me two hours to get the door car off due to threaded Alan bolt on the door handle armrest. Ended up having the hacksaw through the bolt😡😡. I'll drill it out later. Called it a night. To tired to take the glass out. Need to be wide awake and focused to do that! That's the dash stripped. The heater control was a nightmare to get out. How the hell Porsche did that on a production line under time pressure I don't know!? I've labeled the cables so I know what goes where when i have to put it back together. Going to try to save as much of the original car as I can. So restoring the gauges in the Dash is essential. The bezel rings were rusty and tired and no one wants a tired ring😂. So I carefully prised the bezel off, sanded it down and resprayed it Black. Cleaned the face of the tacho and the glass inside and out then very carefully pressed it all back together. I've never done this before so it was a bit nerve-racking but fun. A bit of fine detail work tonight. Wanted a break from the stripping back to the shell part. A bit premature but I thought I'd give cleaning up and restoring the gauges. The bezel is rusty. So having watched a YouTube video I spent about half an hour slowly prising the bezel ring off. Always take ya Time and be gentle with your ring😂. Then I cleaned the glass and tacho face. I'll sand down and respray the bezel ring Black next. I like doing these bits. The devil will be in the detail in this resto 😃😃. Lots done this this afternoon after dad duties this morning. Got the heater box, and hoses out, wiper motors and also took the petrol tank out too. Was delighted to see it solid under the tank! Was surprised as the tank is shot! Task for tomorrow is get all of the gauges and controls out of the dash. And for those wondering I'm taking detailed pictures of before and after I remove everything! All this will have to go back in at some point 😂. When I removed the dash today I found an 1977 American quarter coin jammed behind the dash. Looked like it had been there for decades. So I sanded it down and cleaned it up. Bit of Friday night progress! Got the dash off tonight. Was a pig to get off. Not sure if I'll be able to save it. Was pretty crappy on the reverse side! Long time before I'll need it again so I'll worry about that later. More rot under the dash top when I took that off. Looks worse than it is (he hopes!). Will need to be cut out and sorted when it goes in for welding. Bonnet had to come off so I can get to the heater box, wiper motors and the clips that hold the dash gauges in. Tomorrow's mission is carefully remove all of those and get the dash totally stripped. Nervously started to remove the windows tonight. Nervous to make I don't damage the original glass but also Nervous to see this there was any rot hiding underneath the perished 52 year old rubbers.
