5 Things To Let Go of For Thriving Natural Hair 1. Processing with chemical relaxers If you haven’t already - join us in leaving behind hair and scalp damaging, cancer and fibro causing chemicals in 2022. Newsflash - We don’t actually need these to grow, care for or style our hair. Since they’re damaging to our health, getting rid of them is an all-around self-care plus! 2. Leaving Too Long Between Washes This year is all about regular washes. Clean that scalp and those tresses so they can truly thrive. Washing our hair is an easy way to get rid of itchy scalp. 3. Using Heat Regularly Heat damages hair. There are other ways to stretch Afro and curly hair, we don’t need to fry it like a chicken wing to get here. 4. Coating it in too many products Like in so many areas of life... less is often more. It’s the same with products. Too many products can make hair dry and harder to wash. 5. Using Long term “Protective” Styles With Extensions There’s actually not much that is protective about leaving your box braids, cornrows, weave and faux locks in at all. We can also have all of these styles without extensions and they’re WAY more protective that way. Would you ever put your face in a mask and “forget about it” for a while? ... No? I thought so. It’s not that fab for your scalp either. What’s something you’re taking out of your hair care routine in 2022? Phthalates Linked To Preterm Births Some of you already know that my approach to hair care education is based on natural products and harm-free practices. One of the common toxic ingredients found in hair care products is phthalates. I’ve been suggesting that people look for phthalate-free products for years. Past studies have linked phthalates to breast cancer, reproductive issues, obesity and type II diabetes. However, In July this year, a new study came out on phthalates being linked to preterm births. Phthalates were detected in the urine samples of 96% of the preterm birth Moms in the study. The study concluded that phthalates increased the odds of preterm birth by 12- 16%. Researchers said that ”potential interventions could be… selecting personal-care products that don’t contain phthalates.” This is why I help my community find products that not only work but are also non-toxic. Consumption is not just what we eat but also what we absorb in our bodies and through our environment. Discover natural products that work in @The Organic Afro Community 🖤One Love, Your Fro-Ologist Natalya #TheOrganicAfro #pthalates

Summertime was a time of freedom, but I still felt trapped by my hair... As a kid growing up in Australia, summer was a time of freedom. I’d be out going for walks, riding my bike or going to the beach with my friends. The cold ocean waters were like a cool blanket. Though when the sun was scorching I loved being tucked away at home reading books and playing video games. One thing I didn’t feel free from was my hair. I wore my hair chemically straightened & even that wasn’t enough to keep it “tame” from the harsh summer. I’d battle w flat ironing it only to have it frizz up at the hint of the Indian ocean breeze. So as soon as the heat came a friend & I'd rush to put our hair in braids w extensions. We did them at home - (no hairdressers) & spent a couple of days doing each other's hair. We absolutely LOVED wearing extensions and would leave them in for months & months. Wearing these braids with extensions ticked sooo many boxes. ✅ We felt that we didn’t have to deal with our “difficult to manage” hair ✅ We thought we looked better with braids ✅ We could finally have the long hair that we’d always wanted ✅ It was like we could wake up and do whatever we liked without having to think about what our hair looked like ✅We felt beautiful w long hair that would "stay" w every activity. Especially swimming! But the time would come when we’d reluctantly take our braids out because we knew deep down we’d probably had them in for too long. This part wasn’t exactly our favourite and if I knew what I know now about the damaging effects of long-term extension usage, I probably wouldn’t have left them in for so long. The “Take Down” as we’d call it - the uninstallation of the braids - was way less fun than putting them in. Our hair was often matted in unintentional locs and we’d have to pick and comb these out along with the rest of the shed hair and broken hair that couldn’t find its way out. There was also a feeling of sadness having to go back to having our normal kinky, coily, curly hair and not feeling as attractive. I attended a webinar by TrichoLab with Prof. Ncoza Dlova and Dr Christian Bisanga on "Hair loss in patients of African descent” Prof Dlova focused on Scarring alopecia (alopecia = hair loss) including traction alopecia being one of the most commonly seen types. What’s traction alopecia? It’s hair loss due to tension on the hair follicles, usually caused by tight and repetitive styling. In some of the studies done in Africa and North America, the prevalence of this type of alopecia is between 21% to 30%. This type of hair loss has reached epidemiological levels, especially in patients of African descent. Onset can be rapid, children as young as 3 and 4 are even coming in with this type of hair loss. Some symptoms are: - Headaches - Cant move head - The feeling of a tight band - Pustules: pimples filled with puss at the root - Tenting: scalp is pulled tight like a tent - Follicular casts: hair caste is visible on the surface At an early stage this type of hair loss can be reversible (when there is fine hair remaining on the scalp), but when it’s advanced often a hair transplant can be the only treatment option. Loose hairstyles, changing hairstyles are recommended for the prevention of traction alopecia. Limiting the use of extensions and weaves is important. “How Do I Grow My Edges Back?” If I had a dollar for every time I got asked this question I’d be a very wealthy woman. The truth is, even if I give you all the tips and snake oil in the world And you continue to wear wigs, weaves and synthetic “long term protective styles” - your edges won’t come back to you. Your follicles might even stop producing hair all together… Why? Because these styles are particularly harsh on your hairline and if you rely on them then they will continue to wear away on that sensitive baby hair area and even further back. Aren’t about that life? I get you. I created this 6 week essential styling group programme to prevent future edge loss. Explore natural protective styles that will help you take care of your edges. Learn a healthier way to style and confidently wear your hair before long term damage takes hold. I'm back #CurvyFitChicks with another awesome #curvywomanathlete to recognize for #CurvyWomenCrushingWorkouts Wednesday!! Today we have a chance to celebrate @thethicknutritionist for all she does to not only keep herself #curvyfit, but to teach others as a Zumba instructor how to do the same. I asked Tash, why was being curvy fit important to her. She answered, "It’s important for me to be healthy and fit in my curvy body, because when I’m active — I feel my best. It’s fun to explore different forms of movement and see what my body is capable of doing. I know that no matter how fit I am, I’ll always have my curves, and I love that. I can’t change my body, so why not love + accept it?!" If you haven't had a chance, go check out her page and comment below with 👏 in solidarity for her hard work and discipline in her #curvyworkouts. . . Keep following @curvy_fit_chicks to for more #curvyfitspo, #disciplinetips and #paradigmshifts to better your #curvyfitlife.
