Newborn sessions are not confined to a certain time frame, look or feel. You can make them anything you want. In this session, baby was 3 months old (thanks to several weather and germ induced reschedules), and it turned out perfect. By 3 months you’ve gotten into somewhat of a new rhythm, you and baby have gotten to know each other a bit, and baby is more alert and smiling. It’s not your typical newborn session, and that’s just the way I like it. I want our time together to feel relaxed and not forced. I want the photos to feel like you. So if you’re not ready for a newborn shoot at 2 weeks old, you have not missed your window. I love to leave space at every session. What I mean by that is that I don’t want to fill up the whole time talking and directing. Sure, I will do plenty of that, but I often find that the really great shots, the showstoppers, they happen when I give you space to settle in, mess up the pose, and give it that extra dose of life. The unplanned moments are usually my favorite. In a world where it couldn’t be easier to take hundreds, no thousands, of photos at any given time, why would you ever hire a photographer? Here’s my reasons: 1. To be in the photos. I often hear from people how difficult it is for them to think back on the last full family photo that they have. Getting everyone you love in the photo together is not just great for your lock screen, rather it holds meaning and emotions that will last for a lifetime. 2. For a unique perspective. Photos are never really about just the photo. It’s not about snapping the shutter. It’s about the thought, the feelings and the perspective of the person taking the photos. You get someone who sees you differently than you see yourself, and that is refreshing. 3. For the quality. I’m actually not saying that the photos I take made better than the photos you snap with your iPhone. The quality and importance of a photos comes from how it makes you feel. What I am saying is that when you invest in a photographer that you trust, you are offloading some of the responsibility you feel to capture every moment. Slowing down, taking in each moment, and cherishing those special photos that make you feel something. But the idea is that you’re interacting with your family like you normally would, as natural as possible. My job, as the photographer, is to position you if I need to, capture you in the best light, and get flattering angles. And I will always do that. I love a studio session for a beautiful, clean backdrop that offers great light and a place to play where the options are limitless. You do not need to have a picture perfect house to have an in-home session. Your home is not the focal point. Honestly, you won’t actually see a ton of it. The focus is on you and your family, not your home decor. Before your in-home session we will work together to determine the best rooms for your photos based on light. That way you don’t have to clean your whole house and make sure everything is just so, because I know how stressful that is with kids. I remember right before I was going to have my second having a moment of panic that I would have to split my attention and love between two kids. I had no idea how things would change. That’s the thing about having kids, there is no way for you to prepare for joy, the heart aching love, the moments that will bring you to tears, the times where you think you can’t anymore, and the amount of chaos you can handle. 🤪 No matter how much others tell you, you just won’t know until you do. Until your oldest holds their baby sibling and gently tells them “I love you.” Until you hear the pride in their voice when their little sister says their first words.
