Have you ever heard of Kampung Tugu or Tugu Village?🧐 Kampung Tugu is a village located on the north coast of Jakart, inhabited by people of Portuguese descent. It is from this old village where keroncong music and gado-gado originated💃🥗 Malacca was controlled by Portuguese troops between 1511-1641. Then, in 1648 the Dutch took control of Malacca and the Portuguese troops were made prisoners of war. They were brought to Batavia to become VOC labourers. In 1661, the Portuguese were asked to convert to Protestantism and were exempted from all taxes. They were eventually banished to Southeast Batavia. In the past, the Betawi people had difficulty pronouncing the name Portuguese, so they called it Tugu. So the area where the Portuguese were exiled was called Kampung Tugu and has stood to this very day. Michiels is one of the remaining six Portuguese descendant family names in Kampung Tugu alongside Andreas, Abraham, Quiko, Cornelis, and Browne. To this day, visitors can still find descendants of Portuguese people who use that surname and can interact as well as discover their culture, such as keroncong music, Rabo-Rabo, and Mande-Mande traditions. Based on a Presidential Decision issued by President Sukarno in May 1964, 21st April is celebrated as Kartini Day in Indonesia, to honour the national heroine recognised as a pioneer for female emancipation in the country. School girls and sometimes female office workers would dress up in kebayas, to go to school or work, similar to the clothes worn by Kartini in her photos. While there are many men and women who have been accorded the status of national heroes (pahlawan nasional), a few having streets named after them, only Kartini has her own special commemoration day. A song titled “Ibu Kita Kartini” by W.R. Supratman, who also composed the Indonesian national anthem, would also be sung at schools throughout the country and aired on radio on Kartini Day. Pekojan is a historic district or kecamatan in West Jakarta. Considered the city’s original Arab village, it is a prime example of the rich ethnic diversity found in Jakarta and how different communities created their own landmarks and cultural treasures over time. This historical quarter is located in the old city of Jakarta, precisely in Tambora, West Jakarta, neighbouring the Chinese enclave of Glodok. There are clues in its very name: Pekojan is derived from the Persian word khoja, a title for merchants and indigenous folk of Hindustan, better known as Indian Moors, who hailed from Gujarat and Suraj, West India. These Koja settlers were believed to be the first inhabitants of Pekojan village back in the 17th century. This early community established Al-Anshor Mosque, marking their arrival as the first Muslim community in the area in 1648. This is considered the oldest mosque in Jakarta. Today the Muslim community celebrate Eid al-Fitr. Eid al-Fitr is a time for muslims to come together as a community, strengthen familial bonds, and spread joy, and happiness among each other. Eid al-fitr comes from the two words id and al-fitri. Id is derived from the word aada – ya’uudu, which means to return. The holiday is called id because it occurs repeatedly, celebrated every year, at the same time. Meanwhile, the word fitri has two meanings, namely holy and breaking. Holy means clean from all sins, mistakes, and ugliness. Meanwhile, fitri which means breaking the fast is based on the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW: “From Anas bin Malik: Not once did the Prophet Muhammad SAW. went (to pray) on Eid al-Fitr without eating some dates beforehand.» In conclusion Eid al-Fitr means the return of a person to a state of purity or freedom from all sins, mistakes, and ugliness so that they are in state of purity or fitrah. It is also a day of victory where muslims celebrate by breaking their fast or eating. That is why one of the sunnahs before performing the Eid prayer is to eat or drink even just for a little. This is to show that on Eid al-Fitr 1 Shawwal it is time to break the fast and it is forbidden to fast. The debate over the transfer of the national capital from Java to Kalimantan ended with the passage of Law Number 3 of 2022 concerning the National Capital (IKN Law). This law was signed and officially published on 15 February 2022, which established the Nusantara Capital Authority, a ministry-level organization that oversees the Special Capital Region of the Archipelago Government, and the designation of the name Nusantara (hence the name Ibu Kota Nusantara IKN) as the capital of the country. With the passing of the law, the new national capital will become the seat of the central government as well as delegations from other countries and international organizations and institutions. The transfer of the capital from Jakarta to IKN has been declared as an aspiration to become the most sustainable city in the world and as a driver of the Indonesian economy in the future. It is also hoped that IKN will become a symbol of national identity that can accommodate the diversity of the Indonesian population. Sari Koeswoyo with her wayang paintings proves that everyone can be an artist if they’re daring enough. Sari Koeswoyo’s wayang paintings are a contemporary take on the classic depiction of the Javanese puppet theatre, known as ‘wayang kulit’. The story behind Sari’s journey as an artist is as equally interesting as her paintings. Some may call it a fluke, others, destiny, but Sari really has no other explanation than simply waking up one day and thinking, “What if I was a wayang,” she tells NOW! Jakarta, “So then I started to make my wayang paintings, that was it.” Sari then explains that her interest in wayang was not rooted in a deep-seated fascination with puppet theatre performances. Her early exposure to the art form rather piqued an interest in the specific characters, rather than the traditional stories or narratives like those from the Ramayana or Mahabharata epics. This small curiosity had taken reign over her mind and gave birth to a series of contemporary wayang paintings, taking something traditional and reimagining them on canvas with her own unique narratives and interpretations.
