Forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, was introduced from Japan and is being increasingly used as a healing tool by doctors and therapists. The practice involves walking through the forest mindfully. In 1980s extensive scientific research by the Japanese government found that 2 hours spent forest bathing led to a reduction in blood pressure, lower cortisol levels and improved concentration and memory beyond the usual correlations between fresh air, exercise and wellbeing. Trees release chemicals called phytoncides which help plant communities grow and stay healthy. These chemicals also boost our immune system, and our bodies automatically take in the right “dose” we need for our wellbeing. My private secluded yurt has lots of affordable off grid availability coming up. The one acre field has been managed for wildlife for many years now.it's an honour to be able to do this and helps my mental health 100 percent to hide in this bubble, be with the magical plants, share their medicine and micro manage an oasis and sanctuary for myself as much as the wildlife and guests who visit. I work part time as a youth support worker with young people, mostly teens, who are in alternative education and I'm training as a psycho spiritual counsellor. Every penny I make from letting the yurt goes towards my training and managing the site to increase native diversity. This is a not for profit business and hopefully in a few years will be an eco therapy practise. Sometimes, guests come to Eco Retreats consciously in need of some ecotherapy. Many mention feeling exhausted, and stressed because of their jobs. Some have come for solitude and seclusion after the ending of a relationship or death of a loved one; or after a severe illness. Time in nature, or ecotherapy, has loads of benefits for children such as increased confidence, creativity and responsibility and reduced stress and fatigue. But incredibly, British children are playing outside for an average of just over four hours a week and 10% of respondents in a recent study had not even been in a natural environment such as a park, forest or beach for at least a year.
