Most of the lower level is occupied by space for a small office of 8-10 people, with the majority of the domestic stuff happening in the tower. Doing something new! A lot has happened since the first round of One House Per Day back in 2020, and no change has been more radical than the birth of my daughter last year. Anyone who has tried to be an architect and a parent knows that it is a unique struggle, and it can be extremely hard to find the time to do any kind of nonessential work. Back in 2020 I would spend two to three hours on each OHPD drawing. That sort of time is a luxury I no longer have, but I still hold onto the original ambition of One House Per Day - to get at least one idea out of my head and onto paper every day. So I recently began taking 20 minutes a day and drawing a house, messily, with Ruby’s crayons. I hope you like them! Note the giant room-width bed for four people in the upper right. It an early instance of the “big table” house, in which a large collective space containing a long table organizes several smaller, more private spaces adjacent to it. The table is always capable of accommodating far more people than the house could conceivably sleep. Whether it’s intended use is collective work, large dinner parties, or something else entirely is left to the viewer’s imagination. This is One House Per Day no.32. It was originally posted as no.24. This is one of my favorites from the early days of OHPD. It has an organization that I’m still enamored of - an enfilade of five identical square rooms. But in the details it becomes ridiculous, almost satirical. The design is so obsessed with the rooms being identical that one of each room’s pinwheeling four doors ends up overlapping with the next rooms’, leading to the bizarre experience of passing through two doors to get from room to room, like in a crappy hotel with adjoining rooms. Then the roof scoops introduce a directional top-lighting to the otherwise bi-directional flow of the enfilade. This is One House Per Day no.29. It was originally posted as no.32. It’s a large room that is subdivided by three double-sided fireplaces. It has two doors on either end of its gabled mass, which are aligned with the openings between fireplace-end and exterior wall. The spaces enclosed by the fireplaces have complex relations to their space-defining elements. Some, like the kitchen, actively engage with the fire. This was the 27th drawing, originally posted as no.25. It’s composed of four totally separated rooms, each with its own pyramid roof. From the exterior the rooms appear identical, but the section reveals interiors that differ volumetrically in response to that room’s use. Originally posted as no.15, this was the 25th drawing. It’s a single glassy square room, within which are scattered small, skylit sub-rooms only large enough to accommodate a single bed. One wall of each sub-room is on hinges to provide access to the bed. This is obviously another rooms within rooms house, but here there is a quite explicit ambition to provide a minimum increment of purely private space within a field of communal space. The open room is populated by a confetti of furniture and appliances (see @clarkthenhaus’s confetti projects). Notice the toilet, lav, and tub grouped in the lower right corner of the plan; at least they get a curtain! It’s a square footprint with semicircular subtractions from each side, creating a vaguely X-shaped plan in which a different use takes up each end. Not so sure about this one on reflection. The central table has a full-on, unobstructed view of the toilet! I was and continue to be interested in questioning the structures of privacy that determine how we standardize our domestic space, so maybe this one was intended to be more of a provocation. Originally posted as no.13, this was the 23rd drawing. This is another early matrix of rooms, but it uses rectangular rooms instead of the usual square. However, the exterior buttresses create an ambiguous reading. Is it a 4x4 grid of rectangular rooms or a 5x5 grid of closely space cruciform columns? I guess it’s the former enclosed by the latter. All of the rooms have openings on four sides with appliances, fixtures and furniture pushed to the corners. Two of the rooms are outdoors. The top and bottom rows of rooms have doors to the exterior. This one, on reflection, seems pretty difficult to occupy. Perhaps because where seating is depicted throughout the matrix it’s largely in the form of desks facing the corner with only a few chairs or benches facing the room. It’s another house, like no.5, that collides regular geometries and occupies the overlaps with service spaces that double as access to the primary rooms. Here overlapping circular walls in plan materialize as intersecting cylinders of varying heights, with clerestories. Like in no.5, the intersections in plan correspond to an absence of opaque wall so that these points of intersection become the sources of light and movement into and through the interior. This was the 21st drawing, originally posted as no.9. It’s a four-square in which every room has a door to the outside and a window. There are doorless openings between rooms, but visual obstructions like closet millwork and a fireplace in the center of two rooms enable a sense of closure for each room. Each room has a separate truncated pyramid roof with a skylight. A challenge with this type of plan is how to occupy the inner corners of each room. This was the 20th drawing, originally posted as no.7. This is the first house to be directly inspired by something from real life. On a drive through upstate NY with my wife, I spotted an amazing old house that had a mountainous hipped roof peppered with craggy dormers. I drew this house as a take on that, it’s a relatively diminutive collective bedroom in the lowest floor, with all of the other domestic functions of the house occupying staggered levels within a giant, steep hipped roof with big dormers. There’s a central stair hall that connects everything, lit dimly by the tiniest slice of a skylight at the ridge. This one was originally posted as no.3; it was the 19th drawing. I often get asked which house is my favorite, which is an impossible question to adequately answer. Nonetheless, I still have a real fondness for this one. It’s the first “sneaky dormer” house, in which the dormer, typically used simply to provide a vertical surface for a window into an attic room, instead signifies a more complex architectural organization. Here the dormers reveal the location of a cruciform inner room which contains storage space and subdivides the square plan into four quadrants for the other typical domestic programmatic elements. The sneaky dormer as a tactic embodies OHPD’s ambitions as a project - to look beyond the typical applications of common architectural types (the house) and elements (the dormer). This is the 18th drawing, originally posted as no.2. It’s another take on the single long room that establishes different zones through its curvature. Here there’s a bed, wardrobe, and couch at one end of an S-shaped (in the oblique) or backwards S-shaped (in plan) room, with a kitchen, pantry, and bathroom apparatus at the other end. Between the two bends, the straight section has two long tables with far more chairs than are necessary for the two people (or single person who uses two pillows) who sleep here. The implication is that this house doubles as a workspace. Maybe it’s the house and atelier of an architect. This is the first appearance of the big table, but it’ll reappear many times throughout the series. This is the 17th drawing, originally posted up as no.1. It’s a cruciform arrangement if four rooms around a courtyard. Each room has independent access both to the outside and to the courtyard; to get from one room to another one has to pass through the courtyard. Each room has a specific function. Each room has a gabled roof with a fireplace centered at the exterior wall. This house was the very first OHPD post. Originally posted as no.31, this was the 16th drawing. It’s a 4x4 matrix of square rooms. Four of the 16 rooms, in one quadrant of the matrix, are outdoors with small trees. Each room on the first and fourth rows has a door to the outside. This is handy because many of the rooms have blockages to passage through. Note the kitchen counter which passes through the openings between several rooms. Quite possibly I had just learned about the room-straddling bed at Monticello. This isn’t quite the same, since at Monticello the bed occupies the transitional space between rooms but doesn’t intrude into the rooms themselves. But I’m interested in the idea of furniture as a mediating element. This is the 15th drawing, originally posted up as no.10. It’s another take on the semicircular main room with orthogonal sub-rooms. In this iteration, the sub-rooms remain perpendicular to the main room’s end-walls. Two of the sub-rooms actually meet those end walls. Does that muddy their status as sub-rooms? Oh, and those longer attached sub-rooms double as the entries into the house. Another confluence: this was the 14th drawing, and was posted as no.14. It’s another variation of the one room house. Here a central hearth provides a point of connection for space-dividing curtains to close the room into separate quadrants. Each quadrant houses a typical domestic element - bed, kitchen, table, shower. Originally posted as no.21, this was the 13th drawing. This house takes on a cruciform organization with a large central living room and enclosed rooms in the short wings. The wing rooms contain a kitchen, closet, bathroom, and bedroom. The house has symmetrical double corner doors in the space between the enclosed wings, which themselves have a pinwheeling arrangement of interior and exterior doors. Seems like natural light would be a problem in that middle room. The whole thing is enclosed within a circular garden wall with openings at the cardinal points. Need some trees in the drawing! This was the 12th drawing, originally posted as no.29. It’s four staggered interlocking rooms, each with a half-silo fireplace and chimney. The silo form slips past a window opening at each volume. The slippage between the staggered rooms allows for windows and doors to be placed (only) in the exposed portions of the rooms’ end walls. It’s the first of a handful of drawings that are “housifications.” In this case, it’s the apartment I was living in at the time (the top floor of a townhouse in BK), reimagined as a freestanding house. The plan was already amazing - an enfilade of three main rooms with smaller service rooms off of the main rooms - so it didn’t need too much imagination outside of the truncated pyramid roofs and greenhouse living room. It’s another variation on the arc-segment room, but with another variation that will come up frequently throughout the project - the sub-room or room within a room. Here two rectangular sub-rooms containing a closet and bathroom are located orthogonally to one another inside the curving room. This produces different spaces for sleeping, cooking (the kitchen sensibly shares a wall with the bathroom fixtures), and relaxing within the main room. This one is the eighth drawing, and it was originally posted up as… no.8! Surprise confluence there in the out-of-order first posts phase. The house is the first instance of an idea that will come up again and again - the single long room that develops different zones through its curvature. Here that idea manifests as a thickened segment of a circle, which partially encloses a circular courtyard with a tree at the center point. There’s a shower down at one end, though it seems to be missing the other typical bathing equipment… There also isn’t a clear place to sleep - maybe you sleep on the couch in front of the fireplace in this one? Or maybe it’s a living room/kitchen/shower, in a larger arrangement of detached living spaces. Or maybe I just got interrupted while drawing and forgot to come back to it. I don’t remember. Anyway, two giant doors open the ends of the house. Originally posted a no.16, this was the seventh drawing. It’s a weird H-shaped courtyard shell-vault. One side of the H is swept to produce space for a bed. All of the furniture and equipment either protrudes from the shell or is carved from thickened portions of it. The house is the first instance of a theme that appears frequently - the house as a collection of physically separated rooms. Here this results in strips of interior and exterior space that is extremely permeable in the cross grain. The overlaps are transitional spaces with varying degrees of inhabitability, and the intersection points become cruciform openings composed of both windows and doors. This is the fourth original drawing, originally posted up as no.5. It’s one of very few OHPD houses to indicate materiality - in this case diamond-shaped wood shingles wrapping a variable height A-frame. The internal spaces are arranged as an enfilade, with a bed in the upper level of the tall space. Windows only show up on the side of the house not visible in the iso lol. The spatial typology of rooms connected in enfilade became a regular subject throughout the project. It’s easy to see here how the discipline that characterized the later drawings wasn’t yet present - on the second image you can see how off-center the drawing is, plus the many stray lines, no line weight hierarchy, and general jankyness. This house was drawn third in the series, but was originally posted as OHPDno.6. I was clearly still vibing on the serpentine wall. Here it’s used as a counterpoint to the rigidity of a nine-square plan. It seems like I had some idea about the serpentine wall slipping past larger breakages in the nine-square walls, but the rules, if there are any, aren’t totally clear to me years later. The serpentine wall is lower than the nine-square walls, which pull apart to create larger spaces as the serpentine wall subdivides most of the square cells of the grid.
