I know the instinct. The initial “oh no, I need to make this stop before it gets worse thought.” Toddler tantrums are uncomfortable for everyone. So it makes sense that we’d want to move past them as quickly as possible. And for a lot of us, our natural instinct is to use a lot words. 🗣️ I see it all the time. Kid starts melting down. “What’s wrong? Do you want some water? You seem upset. Do you want a snack? We need to use our inside voice. We can’t yell in here. Ok, I need you stop.” Or some variation of the question and offering solution combo. And we get a lot of advice about “validating the feelings.” “I see you’re upset. I hear you’re angry.” And while yes, it is healthy to allow emotions. And healthy to help kids expand their emotional vocabulary. But mid-meltdown? The best thing we can do is ride it out. And regroup afterwards. Why? Because during a really emotional situation, our kids rationale brain shuts down. It’s processing too much already. That’s why there’s a meltdown! And all those well meaning words? They’re just additional stimuli. Additional things for an overworked brain to process. And often they’re unintentionally triggering. “Do you want some water?” NOOOOOOOOOOO. Which triggers us. And the cycle repeats. So what can we do? Well, every child is unique and you have to understand what helps comfort your child and assess what’s going on in the moment. Sometimes the best solution is to leave an overstimulating environment. Some kids really want a hug and back rub. Others just want to be allowed to be mad for a bit. It’s totally reasonable to toss out an occasional, “I hear you.” But wait until things have calmed down to offer a snack. Or address the issue. Now I’m not talking about the pre-meltdown moment. I think there’s A LOT we can do to prevent full on meltdowns. But once we’ve gone full send over the edge, words are usually not helpful. So the best thing to do is know what comforts our kids, keep our self’s regulated, and wait for the storm to pass before solutioning. #toddlerlife #toddlertantrums #parentingadvice

POTTER POTS AT WORLD OF WEDGWOOD 📍 Wedgwood Drive, Barlaston, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, ST12 9ER This week my toddler and I had a lovely morning visiting @worldofwedgwood to play with clay in their ‘Potter Tots’ session, followed by a walk in nearby Hem Heath Woods to see the bluebells which are beautiful at this time of year. 🔹Potter Tots runs every Friday during term time - 10:30am-11:30am and costs £8.50 per child. It’s aimed at ages 1-5. 🔹 Every week has a different theme - alternating between ‘storytime specials’ and ‘messy clay’ - pre-booking required and it does book up quickly. 🔹 We attended a story time session - it began with a hot drink for me and a juice and a biscuit for my 3 year old, followed by listening to a story, followed by playing with clay, themed around the book which was read. 🔹 My 3 year old absolutely loved playing with the clay, making various creations and then squashing them all. The ladies running the session were all so lovely too. 🔹 After the playgroup, we enjoyed a walk around the Wedgwood site, including seeing the water fountains and a stop in @josiah.and.co a shop packed full of the most loveliest of things all made by local businesses. 🔹 There is an on-site tea rooms and in the summer months a courtyard cafe. 🔹 We finished our visit with a walk into Hem Heath woods which can be accessed next the carpark. Being Bluebell season the woods are beautiful at this time of year. 🔹 There is also an on-site museum of Wedgwood’s design history, displaying the V&A Wedgwood Collection. 20 months with Ellie! She’s growing way too fast and her babyness is fading fast. Last month she had just a few words and now she’s talking up a storm and stringing words together. My favorite is when I ask her a question and she responds with, “no way.” She wants to go on walks every day and loved to be “outside”. She finally allowing Emmy to give her hugs and kisses and is realizing Emmy’s not trying to be bossy she’s just has a lot of love and help to give. She loves every dog but from a distance. She’s still a pretty quite observer and is very hesitant of strangers. If you get a smile from her that’s a big win. We get all the smiles at home though.
