While designing my new website, I’m reflecting on some of my previous works. One of them is “Laundry Day” - an installation, a mixed media painting, and an essay on canvas. They were all shown at my solo exhibition “Roots” at Kente Royal Gallery, New York. These works are my reflection on my childhood and our family household routine, where drying your laundry outdoors was a norm. On cold winter days, our laundry would freeze into sculptures - it would become firm and hard, it would hold its shape until it thaws in the room temperature. My collage was selected to be shown in the Fifth National Climate Assessment project - the first ever Art x Climate gallery that covers far-ranging topics including wildfire, glacial melt, ecosystem collapse, energy transition, and community resilience. Your exhibited works convey profound grief and determined hope. Also, the collage became a cover artwork for the Transportation chapter of the Assessment. The Fifth National Climate Assessment is the US Government’s preeminent report on climate change impacts, risks, and responses. ‘Fresh from the oven’ - my new collage that I titled “Relationships”. This is my ongoing work on the series, “Kingdom of the Crooked Mirrors”. Like the refracted reflections of curved mirrors, space has ceased to be linear, offering an even greater variety of forms. The boundaries of what is considered to be ‘possible’ are pushed apart. Gladioli were the most popular flowers as a present to school teachers. Every beginning and end of school years were celebrated officially and pathetically. We, little students, would wear our parade uniform - white aprons and the hair decorated with ribbons. This description may sound weird today but it was the tradition when I was a child. What a productive Summer! My work was accepted to be exhibited in the show “Absurdity” at the Woman Made Gallery, Illinois. Inspired by the Dada movement, a key element of which is humor, my collage, “Hagiographic Icon - Wellness”, sarcastically observes what beauty and wellness mean today. Often, it’s nonsense or whimsy, paradoxical and absurd. This series of collages is about shifted values. Standards, often absurd, influence our perception of beauty and wellness, gender and self-identity. Sometimes I feel that the cult times, like it used to be several centuries ago, have returned. The cult followers are often harebrained and uninformed. In the past, it was customary to keep icons at home. It would spiritually connect the real world with the heavenly one. A traditional icon was viewed as a portal through which holy spirits would come down to us from their holy place. The saints of today are often some well-known humans – musicians, actors, tech moguls, or politicians. Through gadget screens and media, they influence and guide the population. About the gallery: Since our founding in 1992, WMG has shown the artistic work of over 9,000 women and non-binary artists in 445 exhibitions. Currently WMG is hosting seven exhibitions annually in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood location.
