Today, I threaded a Winchester Model 70 barrel for 1/2-28 threads using the SilencerCo thread specification. This allows the shooter to install a muzzle device to their rifle. After welding I moved on to sight mounting. I learned how to cut doves tails with and end mill and then file them by hand. I then learned to use a dovetail cutter on the mill to cut the dovetail in one go with little to no hand fitting. My first week of third semester was spent learning to weld as well as soft solder and silver solder. I had never touched a welder before in my life before this but I picked up on it eventually and was able to turn in all 4.0s for my projects as well as some extra credit. The soft and silver solders were clamped into a vise and beat by a hammer to test their strength. I learned how to do a trigger job on my GP-100. My instructor was phenomenal at showing me the steps and walking my through the process. I polished up internals, replaced the hammer strut main spring as well as polish the hammer. All said and done the double action trigger pull came down to 9lbs and the single action pull is at 4.5 lbs consistently. I also cut the throats on the cylinder all to the same diameter as well as cut the crown on the barrel until it was concentric. Having the throats on the cylinder cut the same allows the bullet to leave the cylinder and engage the rifling of the barrel with a repeatable results between chambers. After weeks of waiting for the Boiled Linseed Oil to dry on my M1 Garand stock I was able to finally get it graded and reassembled. It was graded at a 3.75, I lost the quarter point for a tiny run in the oil that I missed. I’m incredibly happy with the end results and I learned a lot on this project. I made the initial hole for the through on the lathe. This morning I got my stock graded. Final grade was a 2.8. For my first ever rifle stock I am happy with the results. That said… there are a few things I would change or do differently. The past two weeks I have done the final shaping and sanding of my stock. I made some custom pillar beds from an aluminum bar and glass bedded them into the stock. I installed through bolts behind the recoil lug and at the rear of the magazine. I also made walnut plugs to cover those holes and epoxied them into place. I then installed sling swivels in the forend as well as the rear of the stock. This past Friday I sealed the stock in preparation for finishing. It has been drying over the weekend. The right tool for the job! Over Christmas break I was overhauling all the springs on a Browning Hi Power and got everything installed except the hammer spring due to it's design. After some thinking about how I would be able to get the hammer strut nut off I designed this jig. The past week and a half I have gone from a blocky stock blank to something that really resembles a finished stock. Lots of shaping with rasps and scrapers to get it to this point. I also used a glass bedding compound to secure a repair in place where my safety inlet broke. I made the safety inlet a little to large which led to it breaking. I spent this past week learning how to inlet a stock. I started with a scrap piece of wood I cut off my stock blank. My instructor took me all the way through the process. I started by taking measurements and then marking them on my practice inlet. Once this was done I took my practice inlet to the mill and began milling out my receiver inlet as well as my barrel channel. Once I had this completed I took my practice inlet to my bench and began hand fitting the rifle itself to the wood by using scrapers or chisels. Once I completed my practice inlet I began work on my actual stock. Having the opportunity to do the practice has been incredibly helpful. Today was my first day of one piece custom stock making. I got to pick out my stock blank and begin the process. I started by laying out basic dimensions of a stock. I then cut off the excess wood to use as a practice inlet as well as a block to hold my chisels. Today I turned in my fourth checkering panel. It was my first W pattern. I got a 4.0 on it. I am incredibly proud of this panel, I got to see all my effort in practicing pay off once more. This was my 19th checkering panel I’ve done. We were told when we started checkering that the only to get better was to practice, so that’s what I have been doing. I also got my first engraving plate graded and returned to me. I got a 3.75 on my lines as well as my circles. They are not perfect but as a student that is trying this for his first time I’m proud of them. For my next engraving project we are taking the circles and lines from last week and combining them. Yesterday I got my first 4.0 in checkering. This was my last required diamond pattern. We were told upon starting our hand checkering course that it was going to take time, patience and practice to get good. That was no lie. This was my 18th diamond panel that I did. I kept trying again and again to improve until I was satisfied with my end results. I am not naturally good at hand checkering, the Lord definitely tested my patience with these. The past week has been a tedious one. The beginning of my second semester is focused checkering and engraving. So far I have done 16 panels of diamond pattern checkering and only turned one in for a grade. It is a very very detail oriented and hard skill to learn. The only way to get better is to practice. This is a photo and video of my first graded checkering panel. It is a 3.5. The black marks are sharpie where my instructor highlighted my mistakes so that I could focus on them and prevent them in the future.
