The Roberto Burle Marx site in the West area of Rio de Janeiro was inscribed yesterday on the World Heritage List by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) ▫️◻️The forty-acre property comprises seven buildings, five reflecting pools, the artist’s library as well as his private collection of pre-Columbian pottery, sacred art, Brazilian folk art, design objects, wood carvings and shells. Fine art prints, drawings, sculptures, tapestries, paintings on different supports (such as this work of art viewed in 2019,) ceramic panels, and jewelry created by Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994) are included in the original nomination. The park was conceived as a “painting with plants.” The painting studio, the chapel built in the 18th century and restored by Lucio Costa, a collection of 3,500 native and exotic plants, paths, pergolas, rocks in natura, fountains and tile panels are now considered as part of the world heritage. This long overdue international recognition crowns the most influential landscape architect of the twentieth century, and gives universal value to the assymetric tropical garden, a unique expression of the Brazilian modernist movement. Burle Marx had a vocabulary creating harmony and contrasts while enhancing biodiversity. His sense of abundance was nevertheless guided by a rigorous notion of proportion. Burle Marx infused expressiveness celebrating cultural values, nature and humanity in all his creations.
