This features a wooden lattice starting from the base, creating a rhythmic flow that seamlessly integrates with the second element of the wall treatment—a textile covering in shades reminiscent of linen. The overall design is minimalist and clean, incorporating subtle contrasts in the lighting fixtures to introduce color. The things we hold on to. Sarah, a Delhi based journalist has over the years accumulated some simple yet meaningful things from the family. Whether it’s a painting from her mother, or an old trunk from her father-in-law — these things go along with her wherever she lives, casually stitching a family legacy into everyday life. A family where each person — dense in their work and thus experiences, had some things that can easily be upgraded or discarded. But, perhaps as a journalist and documenter of life, Sarah held on to these pieces and the stories they tell A leather trunk that belonged to her father-in-law, bought when he went to study in England at Oxford on a passenger ship in 1964. Embroidered around the corners with the customary textile lining on the inside. Stitched together in Kabuli Gate, Peshawar. There was a time when all advertisements, contact cards, signages were in English, Hindi and Urdu across the North West Frontier Province. An old Eames chair. Acquired while her in-laws lived in Washington DC, making it a 45 year old Vintage Eames Chair. This chair is a cult object. A luxury that’s recognised by a few and when found — irreplaceable. A painting cheekily stolen by Sarah. Painted by an Oriya modernist, this work was signed and named to Sarah’s mother, but somehow it made its way to Sarah’s wall of art. Vases collected from various places and travels. A vintage teak, Taaru dining table with shaky chairs. A box bed, an old bed common in many homes that kept our extra quilts and blankets. Made of ply, every child remembers how it creaked under the coir mattress. When I visited Sarah’s place she warned me that she was living in a house in transit, thus all her things weren’t with her. But somehow the oldest things she held onto and tucked away in places she used regularly. Despite the temporality of where she was living, she walked me through her house with pride and a common complaint — everything is from everywhere and just a little,… well, worn out with time. Colour Work - In Search of vanishing Khmer Modernism The 1960s was the high water mark of Cambodian modernism - and unsurprisingly most of the surviving buildings are in the capital Phnom Penh. But in the provincial city of Battambang is a classic example - restored to use as the National University of Battambang . Designed by Cambodian architect Ung Krapum Phka it opened in 1968. The story of its survival is a narrative of the often tragic history of modern Cambodia. In our primary bathroom, as throughout our home, I eschewed the brighter colors for which Palm Springs (and, often, our design firm) is known -- in favor of a masculine palette that also references the 1970s era of the home. We filled in the sunken "Roman" tub to create a large walk-in shower. We repurposed the former separate shower location as a laundry area behind closed doors. (The house's original laundry room became our wine room...naturally.) I "joke" that I bought the house for the obviously-custom 70s mosaic in the shower. It's not a joke, so much. It is one of the only original features that we retained, and I continue to love it, each and every day.

Today, I present an artist whom I greatly admire and whose work I absolutely adore: the British abstract artist Gillian Wise (February 16, 1936 – April 11, 2020). Wise viewed herself as a torchbearer for a distinctly European modernism during a period when both modernism and Europe were considered out of fashion. After her studies at the Wimbledon College of Art and the Central School of Arts and Craft in London, Wise emerged as one of the youngest members of the English constructivist movement in the 1950s. Her artistic inclination towards geometry was evident in her diverse body of work, which spanned reliefs, structures with volume, and painting in space with what she calls ‘a formalist sense of logic and sensitivity’. For Wise, constructivism represented a strict form of geometric abstraction that unfolded in three dimensions and drew upon scientific principles. Her art was characterised by a commitment to experimentation and a reductionist approach, focusing on elemental units such as line, colour, and plane. Her structures play on the effects of the geometry of light and industrial materials, as well as contrasts between transparency and primary colours. Her exploration extended to interpenetrating lines and planes, as well as the manipulation of light to create reflections and refractions within her works. As her career progressed, colour became an increasingly dominant feature in her art. In her later years, Wise resided in France. Tragically, she succumbed to COVID-19 on April 11, 2020, following a period of declining health. Paul Poiret died on this day 80 years ago. This post isn’t about his couture, but rather his interior decoration - designed by girls of about 12 years old. This curtain was designed in about 1923 at his Atelier Martine, which opened in 1911 and was named after Poiret’s second daughter. At Martine, young girls from working class districts of Paris were recruited as designers and artists, going on field trips to explore nature for inspiration. The curtain depicted here is probably the pattern called “les giroflées” (gillyflowers or wallflowers). Lymesmith's second series of Brutal Transformation prints recasts the National Carillon as a Memorial to ‘Colour Lost from the Landscape’. The series is titled 'hurry to where they still (bloom)' after the poem 'Lead' by Mary Oliver. The artworks are a lament to habitat loss on the shores of the Molonglo River. Lymesmith has created colour palettes from the flora and fauna of the Critically Endangered Temperate Grassland Habitat that once flourished here and superimposed these lost landscape colours onto the National Carillon, which is itself a memorial to the colonisation of Ngunnawal & Ngamabri Country. The Brutal transformation project aims to stimulate discussion around how we treat our Brutalist buildings now and into the future, and about the transformative potential of colour in the built environment.
