Me and Sofi did visit Gainesville Raceway for the NHRA Gatornationals yesterday! ๐๐ฆ๐๐จ๐ฅณ It was the first time for us to be at Gainesville Raceway, and of course we did choose the rainiest day of the event to go there! ๐ ๐ Well at least we are used to the European weather and that was what we got yesterday! ๐ I went here mostly to see the Pro Mods when we were close after last weekend at Bradenton and the WSOPM! But, we only got to see like 75% of the PM field before it started to rain and did that off and on for about 3 hoursโฆ ๐ So Q3 in Pro Mod was not completed but the plan was that they would get their Q4 run after all the classes late in the evening! Happy race week! We can't wait to head to @bandimere_speedway for the #MileHighNats, but there's a lot of preparation that goes into racing in the Mile-High City. Denver is unlike any other track on the @nhra @campingworld circuit, and that makes it a great subject for #TechTalkTuesday! Numerous changes must be made to the car's setup before hitting the track in Denver - pistons are raised by .060" to increase the compression ratio, overdrive on the supercharger is sped up 10%, ignition timing is increased 5 degrees, a smaller fuel pump is used, and weight is added to the front of the chassis. The fuel curve is changed to be slower applying, and the nozzle area size is adjusted as well. The clutch application is changed to be more aggressive at the hit of the throttle and less aggressive from 300' on. We will run a .5 to 1% change in nitro percentage at altitude - a track near sea level like Gainesville would have us running around 88.5% nitro, whereas Denver will have us close to 89.5%. 1% may not seem like much, but it makes a biiiiig difference in these motors! Because of the high altitude, there is a lack of downforce. To combat this, the rear spoiler is adjusted significantly to create more downforce on the car. Most of these changes are made in an effort to maintain traction through the whole 1000' run while not putting parts in danger of damage. Will there be sun on the track? Is the starting line bald (lacking rubber)? Funny Cars can run as low as 6 pounds of air in the rear tires, and Top Fuel Dragsters can run 6.5. Both the Funny Cars and Dragsters can run as much as 8 to 8.5 pounds of air. Rule of thumb is that the cooler the track temperature is, the lower the tire pressure while the hotter the track temperature, the higher the tire pressure. With a 70 degree track you would probably be in the 6.5lb range, and with a 130 degree track you would probably be around 8.0. We also like to look at the tire circumference or rollout. Back at the pit, we measure each tire with 7 pounds of air in them and can see tire sizes as small as 115" and as big as 117". For the cooler or tighter tracks we like to run the smaller tires to get more wheel speed to prevent tire shake, and on hotter and slicker tracks, we like to run larger tires to get the most bite with the least amount of wheel speed to prevent tire smoke. One last thing to consider - when do you run a new tire versus a scuffed tire (a tire that has already made a pass)? We like to run a new tire when track conditions are at their best. A new tire will generally give you a little bit more wheel speed which is better on a cooler or tighter track, while a scuffed tire is generally better for a warmer track. There really is a lot that goes into figuring out what tires you're going to run! The final member of our #PaulLeeRacing team that we would like to introduce you to is the one and only, Mr. Rick Fischer! Mr. Fischer is the Doctor of Fuel and Director of Entertainment for our @ftiperformance / @mcleod_racing team. With over two decades experience in the NHRA, Rick says that his favorite part of racing is being with the team - "I feel lucky and blessed to be able to race with Paul Lee and our Crew Chief, Jim O." The Bloomfield Hills, MI native's favorite track is Detroit Dragway - he attended his first race there at 15 years old in September of 1960! There are numerous fun facts we could tell you about this character, but here are some of the highlights: he has a '63 Z11 in his living room, a Honda 350 in his bedroom, & a 409 engine in his foyer; he is a graduate of Wayne State University; he is celebrating 32 years of Fischer Honda's presence in Ypsilanti, MI (@fischerhondaypsi); and he was a member of the 101st Airborne as a paratrooper in the Army!
