As a vintage watch collector, I didn’t know much (ok, I’ll confess, anything…) about a duo of young independent watchmakers in Renens, Switzerland who went out and won a couple Grand Prizes from the Foundation of Horology in Geneva (@gphg_official ) in the process. But meet Gaël and Florian of @petermann_bedat. Thanks to the fantastic generosity of watch guru extraordinaire @ericmwind who invited us to tag along with him, @dandywatchman and I got to spend some time with these guys in their small workshop today seeing the amazing work they’re doing…including an insane and gorgeous split second chronograph - something no start-up (or most established!) watchmakers should even contemplate undertaking. Gaël Petermann & Florian Bédat (@petermann_bedat )are an independent watchmaking duo. Here is their second creation, the Reference 2941. Monopusher split-seconds chronograph with jumping minute counter. The two watchmakers set out from their shared point of reference: the pocket watch. The challenge was to render the richness of the finishes and the breathing space between the bridges and the functions, which become possible in a pocket watch, within the restricted confines of a wristwatch. With great care they succeeded in recapturing this spirit, by highlighting certain functions, be it through the design of the springs and toggles, through the contrast of satin-brushed and polished surfaces, and tucking others under the bridges. The result is both lyrical and restrained, rich and legible. @petermann_bedat’s Chronographe Rattrapante Reference 2941 might not have won the Louis Vuitton Watch Prize a couple of weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a stunning horological creation. It absolutely is! Why? It’s pretty easy to explain in a single sentence, really: the beautifully finished timepiece is a split-second monopusher chronograph with a jumping minute counter. ⏱️Le #6 épisode de la saison 2 @horlonomie est en ligne🎙️ Dans ce nouvel épisode, direction Renens, où j’ai eu le plaisir de rencontrer @gael.petermann, le co-fondateur de @petermann_bedat avec @f.bedat. Tout commence à 15 ans, un peu par hasard, à l’école horlogère de Genève. Rapidement bercé par les indépendants, c’est finalement à Glashütte chez @alangesoehne que Gael fait ses armes pour une expérience hors du commun. Les velléités d’indépendance et l’envie d’un retour en Suisse se font de plus en plus fortes, le chemin se poursuit un temps chez Svend Andersen pour commencer les premiers pas d’indépendants. Quelques années plus tard, Gael et Florian décident de créer leur marque, des idées plein les cartons. La suite ? Une première montre, la 1967 et sa fameuse seconde morte, et un premier prix au GPHG 2020 (révélation horlogère de l’année), en plein covid - la célébration attendra. La 2941 (chronographe à rattrapante mono poussoir) arrive quelques temps après : une montre créée dans le but de faire le plus plus beau chronographe, tout simplement. What a huge moment to see @andersengeneve and @calabrese.vincent being honored with a Special Jury prize at @gphg_official Awards Ceremony tonight here in Geneva. Their foresight to create the AHCI or @ahci_updates was instrumental for so many independent watchmakers in helping them get seen and heard long before social media existed. A well deserved acknowledgment by the Jury! As a member of the Academy it was a great pleasure participating in the selections early on this year and getting to help choose a couple of the winners made a for great evening. So thrilled to see @voutilainenwatches take home another award. Maybe now Kari is the most winning recipient? Well deserved if so! Seeing @kudoke_watches & @vianney_halter_official up on stage presenting awards was fun too. Ya tenemos los nominados a los @gphg_official de este 2023, los premios más destacados del sector de la Alta Relojería. Todos sabemos que es algo totalmente anecdótico, que no necesariamente tienen que mostrar la objetividad más estricta y que en muchas ocasiones no nos cuadran los ganadores con los nominados... lo sé. Pero bueno, ¿eso pasa en todos los tipos de premios en este mundo no? En esta edición 2023 sinceramente ni yo mismo podría elegir un solo digno candidato para cada categoría. The Petermann Bédat and Auffret Paris workshops present the unique Chronomètre d’Observatoire for the @onlywatch_official auction. The fruit of the Franco-Swiss collaboration, this watch features a caliber based on a Zenith 135 observatory chronometer gear train that has been completely reworked to create a unique movement. This caliber with a frequency of 18,000 vph combines the adjustment system, domed beveling, "soleillage" mainplate and an anchor bridge typical of the Petermann Bédat team. The "charbonné" decoration of the bridges, the shape of the ratchet wheel and its click are derived from the style of the Parisian workshop. 💰 Between 50,000 and 100,000 Swiss Francs . The movement is based on a Zenith 135, and features Petermann Bédat's signature swan-neck regulator system. Auffret Paris's aesthetic codes are seen in the click system and the charbonnage on the surface of the bridges. The dial is made of flame-whitened solid silver, and is engraved with rose gold indexes. The hour and minute hands are made of rose gold, while the seconds hand is flame-blued steel. It's through watches like this, and the young men behind it, we're assured the future of independent watchmaking is looking quite bright. The duo of @gael.petermann and @f.bedat formed @petermann_bedat in 2017, with this stunning Reference 2941 Split-Seconds Chronograph being only the second model to date. This takes the complexity up a few notches compared to their debut piece, as a rattrapante chronograph is widely considered one of the most challenging complications in watchmaking. The pusher in the crown activates the chronograph, with the pusher at 10' splitting the superimposed seconds hands if desired. A second pushers brings the stopped hand back to the running one again.
