From the timing of bursts, longitudinal calculation or just to simply reassure how long something stayed on the air, watches, chronographs, stopwatches and timekeeping in general have been an integral part of aviation. Literally from day 1 , I'd even dare say day 0, the Wright brother used American made packet watches and stopwatches to measure air time (Slide 2), they were vital, though indirectly, to understand and apply the engineering changes that were needed to arrive at the 1903 Wright flyer. A while later, Alberto Santos Dumont (slide 3) asked his friend Louis Cartier for a watch he could wear while on flight, giving us, essentially, the first tool wristwatch, and some would argue the first "mass production" watch. About two and a half decades after the Wrights first flight, Longines helped Lindberg navigate towards Paris in his famous Spirit of St. Louis flight, In warfare the pilots of WWII saw wristwatches as a vital tool and part of their uniform, timing missions , and fuel consumption. The jet age gave us the modern chronograph, Navitmers, Type XX (a bit earlier but still), and I'm sure some pre-moon Speedmasters and Heuers were used by civilian and military pilots. The spec race arrives, only 56 years after the Wright brothers, and watches are there the Sturmanskie, Pobeda, Heuer, Bulova and of course Omega (Slides 4 and 5), making instruments, helping astronauts time bursts, land on the moon and return safely to earth! Fast forward to today and still watches are a vital part of aviation, the GMT a useful tool for the Jetsetter, and pilot, the g shock a tool for military pilots and astronauts, Omega still being the only EVA certified watch by NASA, IWC innovating inmaterial so fighter pilots can time fuel runs and turns precisely while not feeling anything on their wrists, and Breitling still using their aviation heritage as iconic design. While waiting for my collection to evolve further and further, today I bring you my selection of five sports watches in different price ranges that I find really interesting and that I recommend adding to any collection. Some of these could easily overlap, but I find that they can at the same time nicely coexist in the same watch collection. Let's start with my favourite diver, the Omega Seamaster 300 Diver 2254.50 'Peter Blake', a sporty military-style watch but in a modern guise. I appreciate of this Seamaster the recall to the old Big Triangle, the really unbeatable lume, the gladium spheres, the bracelet different from the usual Seamaster Diver and the reduced thickness compared to its resistance to 300 metres depth. Let's move on to the Rolex Explorer II 16570 ‘Polar’, the rolex that departs from the classic stereotypes of the crowned brand by its shiny white dial, black spheres and its extremely sporty look. The Seiko SPB143 'Baby 62Mas', a re-edition of the famous Seiko diver from the 1960s, an affordable diver but with higher-end timepiece specifications. I love the combination of the soleil dial and the brushed bezel both in a beautiful grey colour that changes with the light and its simple but solid design, a real must have. Another crowned watch that has been a dream for me for years is the Rolex GMT Master 16750, ‘no date’ dial with 'bicchierini' indexes, a transitional model between the old and new GMT series. This watch has an incredible, iconic and truly marvellous appeal, I appreciate its super slim thickness and vintage style thanks also to its domed acrylic glass. Finally, the much more modern Tudor Pelaxos FXD 'US Navy', which I already mentioned in yesterday's post. The perfect modern tool watch, slim and light thanks to its titanium case and premium specs, a great watch to wear mindless on your wrist. What do you think of this selection of 5 sports watches?
