Hill climbs and time attacks aside, the ethos behind the car is primarily to run TSDs at the drop of a hat. So here's something that has made a massive difference to our rallies. Our first event was done with phones and GPS, which are very accurate, but sometimes take a second or two to update every once in a while. Not a big deal but as I decided to make this a dedicated TSD car, investing in some proper hardware was something I wanted to do. So a Brantz International 2 S rally meter and timer with remotes were installed! Huge thanks to @motorcadepvt for stocking this equipment, and @macroautotech for the installation! It's important not to take these things too seriously. The historic class at the 89th @ceylonmotorsports @nipponpaintlk Mahagastotte Festival Of Speed isn't a competition per se. Rather, it's a chance for owners of classics cars to have the satisfaction of setting some timed runs up South Asia's oldest hill climb. For RallyPug, we weren't here to break or make records. it was a chance to set a baseline time, to hopefully be bettered in the coming years. The fastest time of the day was a 44.267, set by Mahen Madugalle in a Mini. The 505's best time was a 55.364. Let's be realistic. Even with all the will in the world it'll never beat a Mini driven by a pro. I love the Italian connections this car has. Most of us know the 505 was one of many cars that Pininfarina designed with Peugeot. But this is a fun one that is less widely reported — Series 1 wheels made in Italy by Cromodora, with the Peugeot stamp for good measure. Wheel options are incredibly hard to come by, as the correct Peugeot 504/505 PCD fitment is 140 x 4 – a super-rare size that was otherwise found only on some Subarus. But as soon as I saw pictures of cars with these wheels on, I knew I had to have them. Finding them was a challenge, but I finally scored with a Yahoo auctions listing in Japan. The only problem with that was getting them here afterwards. No exaggeration, it took two years, mainly because Covid decimated the usual shipping channels. But thanks to the stand up bloke, @hoptheglobe they finally arrived in Sri Lanka earlier this year. Another aspect that needed changing were these mirrors that came with the car. They were modelled after the Series II (facelift) 505, but were, in typical fashion, some kind of odd reproduction that could barely be adjusted properly to serve any purpose. I actually like the 505's stock steering wheel. The early two-spoke design is not only quirky, but it gives a tremendously good view of the dash binnacle. On the downsides, it's rather large and prone to flex. Plus mine was well beyond its best before date, looking quite crusty. The design isn't very conducive to having it wrapped in leather without having ugly lips protruding from the bottom of the two spokes. Story time (again). For some unfathomable reason a previous owner had decided to "improve" upon the 505's steering system by retrofitting a power steering rack from something Japanese... The first inkling I had that something was amiss was when I attempted to extract the car from a tight spot and realised it had the turning circle of the moon. I'm not proud to say that it actually took me some time to realise that there was something up – I just assumed it was a shortcoming of the chassis. But, after some investigation we found that there had been some rather poor bodging to blame. So began the search to put it right. Onwards to the first rally of 2022! I'll dedicate the next few days to showcasing some of the modifications we're making for the @ceylonmotorsports Lotus Historique this weekend. First off: inertial reel retractable seat belts borrowed from donor pug. RallyPug already has belts, but they're of the fixed kind – meaning you have to adjust them manually like you would a backpack strap. Confession time: So you know how I said we completed last year's rally without any issues? Well that wasn't entirely true. While I went to freshen up at the midnight midway point I gave the keys to co-driver @hishamsamsudeen with disastrous consequences. But luck was with us. Firstly, the passenger lock could be opened with a teaspoon, and the ignition barrel used another key from something Japanese. It gave me a great excuse to order a matching set of OEM ignition barrel and locks from the US. This is very much a latergram, but what an experience our first rally was. First off, what a machine the Peugeot 505 is. Many less-informed turn their noses up to these old French cars, but 550km over 24 hours including transport segments — with 200km flat out — and the total number of problems I had with her were zero. Zilch. Nothing. Not only that, I was left fresh as a daisy, the cushy suspension and armchair-like seats soaking up every bump, jump, and undulation best at speed. Bear in mind, bar the extra lights, there were no modifications made. Going through these old pictures only makes me more eager to get back behind the wheel for some kind of competitive event – which coincidentally will be next week! Sadly we don't actually know where we placed. Then came the rally. In early 2021 a TSD rally was announced, and at first, I genuinely had no intention of entering. Then all of a sudden it struck me: why not enter the 505? The 505 was and is a choice rally car, both in its heyday and in classic events today. It's one of the last Pugs with sublime, crater-absorbing suspension, and since the car wasn't what you'd call mint, I wasn't too precious about it. A casual browse on Ikman turned up these @cibieofficial Super Oscar lights, and all of a sudden things started to look a whole lot more real! The first time I felt the old girl was finally somewhat presentable was in November 2021. Sitting alongside a gorgeous 205 GTI at one of Colombo's unofficial classic car Sunday runs. Of course I'm under no illusion that it needs a boat load more work, including a full respray at some point – but at this juncture ensuring the car worked reliably and was worth further investment was the aim of the game. Another subtle cosmetic change that I didn't want to overlook: the side trim which had likely gone missing over the years. Mechanical parts are plentiful here but body elements less so. A pleasant surprise is that everything listed in the previous post was available at Panchikawatte (Sri Lanka's auto parts district). Thanks to the model being used by the police, government, and in various other fleets, there's still a fair amount of NOS parts for the 505. So what needed to be replaced on 12-9997 a few weeks into ownership? Brace yourself: - New Peugeot genuine clutch kit - New OE Record shocks front and rear - New OE shock mounts and boots - New OEM brake pads and shoes - New OE Bendix clutch master and slave pumps - New OEM engine temperature sensor - New OEM speedometer cable - New OEM water pump and changed hoses for good measure. None of this stuff is scary per se, but boy does it add up! There had also been some rather er, ingenious, work done to other areas of the car which required some correcting.
