I went diving in Mexico last week hoping to see at least 1 eel and ended up seeing 4 or 5 GIANT Green Moray Eels! One wasn’t even in a cave just chilling out on the ground! I almost punched my dive buddy I got so excited! Then we floated over a very small spotted eel who was poking his head out of some coral! Starting the new year exactly how we ended 2023—with the alpha ladies of the ocean. The girls were absolutely on fire yesterday Jan 1st; active, curious, misbehaving, and constantly in our face, which made for an amazing dive. It took a lot to muster enough energy to get our butts out of bed new year’s day to dive with these beauties, but our will power was rewarded in spades. Our first dive with the bull sharks this year is more than likely our last of the season. As we head to Indonesia, Guam, Palau, and the Maldives in a couple of days, we won’t have an opportunity to return to Playa del Carmen until March. While it’s likely that the bulls will be gone for the season by then, for the sake of @hector_shark and the rest of the hard-working dive shops down here, I hope they stay until April. Thursday Happy Hour. A quick photo dump for a not so happy hour. Unfortunately we’re boarding our plane home in a couple of hours and have to leave “Las Gordas” (a.k.a. bull sharks) behind. It’s been an incredible two weeks of sensational encounters with these lovely ladies—it just never gets old for me year after year. I can’t thank @hector_shark and his amazing crew at @aquaworldcancun for a wonderful time these past two months. Regardless of my diving experience I always jump into the water humble and ready to learn, and it sure was a humbling and learning experience watching the two Hectors put on a masterclass time and time again. After a brief stay at home for the holidays we’re coming back to Playa del Carmen to ring in the New Year, which is our yearly tradition. I’m hoping and praying that the girls are still here then because my season will be cut short this year due to some amazing dive trips I have planned for January and February—more on that in the upcoming weeks. Diving in El Eden Cenote 🤿🍃✨ This was both one of the most exciting and most relaxing experiences of my life! We entered the cavern system, then dove through a tunnel that opened up into a sun laser drenched cenote opening. We then hung underneath the cavern ceiling, dipping into hydrothermal vents that felt AMAZING in the cold water ♨️🌊 Also pictured- a neat pictogram cave diving poster on site. I love the clarity of those illustrations! Case of the Anti-Mondays. . After a couple weeks of hard work down here, I spent my last dive of the trip looking for eagle rays. Alas, no luck. In fact, I didn’t see a single one all trip—not even at the famed C-56 wreck in Puerto Morelos. Part of the issue is that the water is still warm, so the chances of seeing eagle rays around these parts are low under those conditions. We had a “northern” front come through last week that brought colder water and more bull shark action, but unfortunately I didn’t catch any eagle rays. We’ll be back in about 10 days to try our luck again though. Peak eagle ray season coincides with bull shark season, so I’ll have plenty of chances to see my favorite ray this winter.
