It’s a little early to graft, but we came across U of H / John John cutting with a seed pod. The host plant is a seedling that is several years old that had been plunged in the soil outside. The plant is now inside on a heat mat.

@nui_plumeria Nui’s Wizard. Our grafted plant is small but we were lucky enough to get some blooms late last season in 🍊, California. Zone 10a~b. The flowers have an amazing purple edge on every petal. With time and more heat, should be a stunner!
A couple of seasoned grafts. These are 3 years old and starting to disappear. The host and scion have different growth habits as you can see with the difference in diameter over time.
Upside down mid cut graft from late last season. Definitely growing slower than normal for a mid cut, but it’s doing really well! 🍊, CA.
Seedlings started on 12.31.23. I germinated them floating in water for a week, and then transplanted them in the jiffy pods about two weeks ago. I keep them moist, but not soaking. These are Purple Serendipity, Pirom Purple, Jamaica Fire, Fireblast, and Raspberry Sundae.

Defoliating some of my trees this evening. I pick up or cut off all of them over winter. I do it over time. I remove to prevent insects from overwintering, mainly leaf hoppers, but I also know some folks that do so in areas that get prolonged cold weather or frost to protect from damage or rot. I like this time of year when the trees are dormant, it’s interesting to see how much your trees have grown, the differing shapes of various cultivars, or possibly tiny inflos or seed pods you haven’t noticed. This particular tree, one I grafted a couple of years ago now, has University of Hawaii, Cols Cooktown Sunset, JJ Firestorm, and Not John John noid. I think 10 separate grafts of the four cultivars. It’s a decent match for the most part. They are all tall vigorous growers in general. The leaf scar spacing while not exact, are very similar. Photo of the tree and some of the grafts. I’m in 🍊, CA. I still have a couple of blooms but pretty much all going to sleep at this point.
Nylon mesh netting works nice for covering seed pods so the seeds don’t blow away or get lost. Inexpensive for a large quantity on the internet. This seed pod is Pride of Nui. Really excited to plant these! Fingers crossed! The bag nets are long and expandable enough to account for some growth if you want to cover them earlier than spring of the following year. The seed pods themselves take approximately 9 months to grow, mature, dry and crack open exposing the seeds. The pod needs to stay on the tree until this happens, so don’t cut them off. At that point the seeds are ready to plant. This particular seed pod is probably half way to maturity.
Penang Peach , hasn’t dropped very many leaves and is still blooming today. Getting colder in 🍊CA, but mostly sunny the next 10 days so hoping to see some more. Low 40s coming. It’s a very compact tree, heavy bloomer, with amazing thick flowers that smell great. 01.03.2024

PATIENCE! I tell people often that it's no coincidence that the words patience and plumeria start with the same letter. Here are photos of one section of our plumeria farm - one from 2011 that shows many small plants that we had just put in the ground in the last year or two. The second photo was taken yesterday, and you can see what has happened in 12 years. Once plumerias get mature and well-rooted, they will bloom every year. It just takes time.
