In so many ways it seems that as a species we have forgotten how to live in well with each other and the rest of creation. And yet, in the depths of who we are, there is a wellspring of love that is always calling us to an original harmony, to replace competition with collaboration, rivalry with friendship. 1,500 years ago, St. Benedict wrote a Rule for monastic life which has been one of the most influential texts in the history of Western Europe. In a world facing so many challenges, Benedict’s simple guide for a school of love in community offers us a wealth of transformative wisdom. Where should we begin? Precisely where we are, says Benedict, in our everyday life and relationships. How do we begin? We must learn to “Listen carefully,” to “attend with the ear of your heart.” “Monasticism,” says the Benedictine Joan Chittister, “is the single-hearted search for what matters in life. Any life. Every life.” In this sense, the monastic heart is not only to be found within someone wearing a habit, but is to be found within all of us. I’ve always thought this palindrome by my teacher, Dom Sylvester Houédard, beautifully describes the spiritual journey. You can read it from either end. Whichever end you begin from, you are drawn inward, to and through the centre, then outward. Dom Sylvester was a noted poet, a leading exponent of a form known as concrete poetry. To read the word, you can’t stop in the centre. Like Peter, who wanted to stay up the mountain with Jesus following the transfiguration, we must come back down the mountain. The journey inward always leads us outward in love and compassion - to share the fruit of contemplation, to live as the likeness of what we have encountered, the love which is the deepest truth of our being. I love this place….so tranquil, and such a magical combination of man made structure and nature in a slightly other worldly setting. I had hoped to sit and sketch the mulberry tree but the usual bench had gone ( maybe for maintenance).
