**Bannesa is doing an Instagram takeover tomorrow, April 24!** #MeetArtsArch Bannesa Hernandez, a second-year art B.A. student. She chose to study art because it allows her to unleash her creativity and artistic style while learning new techniques. Bannesa’s favorite project was creating a white line rubber relief print, where she carved out a design from a piece of rubber and used watercolors to print. Currently, Bannesa is an Arts Ambassador, where she helps with the Accepted Student Program tours. She became an Arts Ambassador because she wanted to get more involved in the college and help her fellow students. This year she was also part of the Mending Walls mural committee and helped organize the painting sessions and other events held this semester. In May, Bannesa is planning to sell her art pieces at her local art gallery. In her free time, she enjoys walking trails, reading, and spending time with friends and family. Her motto is "¡Échale ganas!," which means "give it your all" - a phrase she learned from her grandma. #psuarts #WeCreate @bannesaaaa_

Join us on Wednesday, April 3 in the Jury Space or via Zoom as we wrap up our Lecture & Exhibit Series with a visit from Bryony Gomez-Palacio (@bryonygp), principal and co-founder of graphic design firm UnderConsideration (@ucllc). Gomez-Palacio has run UnderConsideration, an Indiana-based graphic design firm that generates projects and content while taking on limited client work, since 2001. UnderConsideration organizes design events, sells products such as design prints and publishes posts on their current blog titled, “Brand New.” The blog’s bi-weekly podcast, “The Follow-Up” discusses the projects reviewed on “Brand New” and features conversations with the designers, and sometimes clients, to uncover the context, background, and design decisions behind the work. In 2010, Gomez-Palacio and her husband Armin Vit created the Brand New Conference (@bnconf), a two-day event on corporate and brand identity with some of the most active and influential practitioners from around the world. The event furthers the exchange of knowledge within the design community, taking place in person and online. The 2024 event will take place Oct. 10-11 in Salt Lake City. #MeetArtsArch Mazie Kemper (center), a first-year Graphic Design student who won second place in the Smeal College of Business START (Striving Toward Awareness and Respect for Tomorrow) Essay Contest. She read her essay, "A World Full of Zebras," at the START Conference on March 27. In her essay, she describes her vision for an ideal society, opening with a comparison between what is valued in nature and what is valued by humans. "...Everyone's eyes are mesmerized by the dazzle of zebras peacefully feeding on the native brush. At first glance, the animals all have a similar recognizable stripe pattern, but no two zebra markings are the same. Nature praises wildlife and botany's uniqueness and diversity, so why is this social norm different in humanity? Many people are quick to judge certain genders, races, cultures, etc., offering quick views, creating unfair assumptions and biases." Congrats, Mazie! #psuarts #WeCreate @stuckeman_views

Our spring Lecture and Exhibit Series continues on March 27 with a visit from Alison Hirsch, associate professor at @usclandarchurbanism, landscape theorist, historian, and designer. Hirsh will present a Department of Landscape Architecture Bracken Lecture, titled “Landscape and the Working Country,” at 4:30 p.m. in the Stuckeman Family Building Jury Space and via Zoom, before opening an exhibition of her work in the Stuckeman Family Building’s Rouse Gallery titled “The Other California: land, loss, labor, liberated futures along phantom shores.” Hirsch’s lecture will focus on the relations of the body and land or place. The talk will start with an overview of some 1960s activist design practices that have transformed conventional practice before evolving into a focused look at the manifold nature of physical work, both how the physical process of building together has been a vehicle for liberatory agendas and how labor on land has been exploited as a form of violence targeted at specific — often racialized — bodies. Her exhibition, which will run through April 25 in the Rouse Gallery, tells the story of the Tulare Lake Basin, a hydrological system that defines a cultural history that is both unique and ubiquitous. The exhibit discusses a landscape that was once composed of land, water, multispecies life, and humans who managed the land for survival and ceremony. The landscape’s rapid transformation by settler colonialism into a vehicle of capitalist enterprise eradicated ecological lifeways, remanufactured hydrology, toxified land, water, and the laboring bodies forced to participate in the new order.
