Ramadan reminds me of home. Not my home in this new city. Not the home my parents & siblings live in. But the home we left behind, in search of greener pastures. I miss the tension buzzing in the air as the clock ticked closer and closer to iftaar time. Everyone would sit in silence with their eyes closed to try and hear the azaan better. I miss the fresh, flaky aloo samosas, the variety of pakoras, the sweet, tangy, crispy jalebis, the spicy mix chaat and the masalaydaar paani puri. I miss the way everything stayed open all night long. Restaurants, dhabbas, shopping malls - to accommodate the population that practically becomes nocturnal for a month. I miss the friends that would drag me out for a cup of chai and some neverending conversations after iftaar and the ones I’d stay up all night with just so we could experience a chaotic sehri together. We’d race against the clock to eat enough to last us the day. And then drink way too much water and not be able to lie down, let alone sleep. Nashta at Quetta Alamgir Hotel! (Bahardurabad, they have family hall upstairs.) If you haven't done this you are missing the bestestttt Lacha Parathas, Karak chai, Cholay/Channay ka salan!! Heavy on tummy but light on pocket. Their taste is extra ordinary. Suggestions: (muft mashwaray) *The parathas are small. Just the size of an adult's palm. So order at least two per head. *The channay ka salan is love. Even if you don't like it at home, do try from here. Just a single plate may be. If you like it, then a is sufficient for two ppl. *The parathas taste yummm with chai. So, don't finish them before the arrival of chai. *The anda omelette is just so so. Order it only if you can't live without it. *The parathas are quite sweet. Don't forget to add salt generously to your Chana salan before eating. *Bill kam rakhne ka totka: Take water bottles from home and ask the waiter to give paper glasses to you.
