I recently posted a story featuring my new HumminGuru ultrasonic record cleaner and received quite a few messages from people asking about it. I don’t usually do gear reviews on here but thought I’d give an update for those who were interested. I’ve run about a dozen records through the machine so far including a few secondhand discs and a couple of newer releases - two of which I found to be noisy. The results are very impressive, reducing surface noise to a minimum and completely killing static. I mainly buy new records so my intent is to clean each one before playing whilst going through my entire collection. The machine isn’t exactly cheap but mine came from Juno Records in the UK complete with spare filters, replacement wheels that rotate the disc inside the unit and a pair of adapters for 10” and 7” records. Operation is quick, easy and fairly quiet with various settings available including an automatic clean & dry function. I find that on new albums, a 2 minute clean and 5 minute dry cycle yields excellent results. I also love the fact that I can opt for an automatic setting and leave the room whilst the machine does its work without having to keep an eye on it. I can definitely recommend the HumminGuru to those maintaining larger collections or who regularly buy secondhand records. Happy 34th birthday to one of my favorite records of all time.
April 23rd is a busy day in pop culture history. Roy Orbison and William Shakespeare were both born on this date (over 350 years apart). Wilco’s “Yankee Foxtrot Hotel” and the Rolling Stones’ “Sticky Fingers”’were both released on this date. And in 2005, YouTube was launched. Even with all of that happening, I’d say that this is the most important thing to be born on April 23rd, forty-eight years ago today.
