Lisa O’Neill - All of This is Chance (2023) Rough Trade All of This is Chance had the pleasure of not only being my favorite album of 2023, but it also contains the years best song IMO with Whisht, the Wild Workings of the Mind. If you find you’re the type of person that enjoys foggy walks thru the countryside, self reflection, Nick Cave or being alive, this album is right up your alley. The sparse instrumentation and lyrical imagery of O’Neill’s stories create a cinematically breathtaking experience that agonizingly detail the process of self discovery in a cruel and beautiful world. In short, if these songs don’t move you, check your pulse. While the mastering is better and more detailed on vinyl than the digital version, my copy on standard black wax is a little noisy and has some stitching in places. Either way, a small price to pay for being able to enjoy this amazing album. Traffic And Weather was the first Fountains Of Wayne album I got to anticipate, and I spent a lot of time with it in 2007. I don’t think that this one has held up quite as well as the band’s other records, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have its bright spots. “Someone To Love” is about a strong opener as the band had, pairing their trademark quirky storytelling with a really strong chorus. “‘92 Subaru” leans just a little too far into the classic rock pastiche for my taste, but it’s still got a lot of fun energy. The instrumental parts of “Yolanda Hayes” almost sound like a less depressing version of some late-00s Death Cab For Cutie, with lyrics that kind of work like a different take on the first song. The title track is pretty straightforward (but the little break in the middle is kind of cool), and then “Fire In The Canyon” serves as brief respite of sincerity between that and “This Better Be Good.” This band always did that countryish style so well, and I wish we’d gotten more from them in that vein. The next two songs are different sorts of character studies, with some cool instrumental parts in both and a really nice overall sound in the latter (even if the lyrics are underwhelming). “Strapped For Cash” is kind of stupid fun, and then “I-95” is about as close to a daydream as that highway has ever sounded. “The Hotel Majestic” picks the energy back up with that swooping synth part, and then it’s full of great little details. I kind of forgot how much I like that song. “Planet Of Weed” gives a clue about where some of the more questionable lyrics might’ve come from, and “New Routine” is a buoyant, catchy song. “Sweatbacks And Traytables” ends things on an high note with another favorite, this one full of solid songwriting. There’s not a “Stacy’s Mom” or a “Hey Julie” here, but this is a beautiful pressing and such nostalgia that I’m glad to have it on the shelf. Deadheaven- Sunbather (2013) Deafheaven are strongly influenced by black metal but their music draws comparisons to shoegaze, post-rock, and alternative rock sounds. This trend was further continued on Sunbather. The melancholic songs featured on this album include wall of Sound arrangements, shoegazing and post-rock influences, that result in a dense sound that sometimes breaks down into slower melodic moments topped with vocalist George Clarke’s reverb-soaked screaming style. It creates a strangely beautiful and peaceful sound buried between all the noise and brutality. Well, I’ve finally got the one and only RSD title I cared about! Y’all, this is one of the greatest pop rock albums of the 1990s if not of all time. Absolutely unbelievable top to bottom. This has his biggest hit, Barely Breathing, along with She Runs Away which was also a radio hit back in the day. If you’ve never heard it, you should listen at least once. It’s a crime that it took 28 years for this to ever see a vinyl release, but better late than never I suppose. 4/29 (日) 朝早くから出かけるつもりが身体が怠くて昼まで家でゴロゴロ。いつものように6時に起きたのだが二度寝、三度寝ではっきり目が覚めたのが12：30。1日台無しの悪い予感。案の定夕方までリビングでゴロゴロしてしまいさらに15時から17時過ぎまで微睡んでしまった。 奥さんは朝8時くらいに友達と奈良までなんやら#染物体験 にお出かけ。私は御坊か新開地まで行く予定にしていたのだが結局怠惰な休日を過ごしてしまった。昼ごはんの用意も家内にいらないと言っていたため何も食べるものがなく結局小さな#クロワッサン🥐 1個と#ぼんち揚 を少しだけと下宿学生みたいな感じに。夕方にはお腹が空いて1人で外出するかどうか悩みに悩んでいたらまたもや寝てしまい空腹感も何処かへいってしまった。 17時くらいに帰宅予定と言っていた奥さんは案の定お約束通りに19時に帰宅。幸い彼女も晩御飯は食べていなかったので外食することにした。ところがお腹が空いて早く表へ出たいのに奥さんの#染物講座 が始まりさあ大変。昔なら黙れ！と一喝していたがあまりにほがらかに説明してくれるので仕方なく付き合う事にした。ただしいっさい頭の中には入ってこず。何を食べるかひたすら考えていた。 考えた結果#韓国冷麺 が食べたくなり#焼肉屋さん に決定。どうせならと初めてのお店へ行ってきた。もう随分と昔からある#大阪狭山市 の#黒毛和牛焼肉みや さん。期待以上に美味しかった。ただあまりの空腹さに判断力が鈍っていたのでバカほど注文してしまい吐きそうになる大失態。学習能力ゼロだ。 しかも肝心の#冷麺 の写真を撮り忘れているし。#焼肉 #晩御飯 帰宅してから最近買った#ムック本 をパラパラと斜め読み。近頃また#レコード にちょいちょい手を出している。もう病気かもしれない。。。 #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylcollector #vinylrecords #recordcollection
